Players can make more on NIL after their base compensation. Would force schools to really do their homework on players.

Makes the most sense.

SCOTUS ruled 9-0 that system wasn’t legal. How do you propose going back to it?

No salary cap is possible unless the players unionize and a salary cap is collectively bargained.

What incentive do the players have to unionize at this point? The current system where it’s entirely free market seems to be more player friendly than a unionized collectively bargained system would be to me.

The players don’t control sports, fans do. Money talks… how much NIL money goes to men’s hockey or soccer?

Not sure I’m following. Fans “controlling” sports doesn’t impact the way the laws are written. Salary caps without unionization would be an illegal infringement on commerce if all the employees in question didn’t agree to them. Obviously the top players would have no incentive to agree to it.

If the NCAA ever gives in and all college athletes become official employees you would have at least a sliver of hope when it comes to unionization and in turn a cap on wages earned for their on field performance would theoretically be possible legally, but based on precedent, it’s unlikely NIL wages would fall under that umbrella.

A 5* QB might get a “max” offer from every school in the country but there would still be nothing stopping USC from having an LA business/booster offer an additional $10M for his services as a spokesperson if he chose USC.

Rules can and will be put in place due to fan pressure. Money talks, and the fans put up the money.

What kind of rules are you talking about that you think would hold up legally?

What rules hold up legally in every other league where players get paid?

Rules that are collectively bargained. Even the USFL players unionized.

The fans had a system they were happy with and it was a system all the schools were more than happy with. Everyone was making tons and tons of money except the players and SCOTUS struck it down pretty emphatically.

When you say something like “money talks” I don’t really understand what you mean. The main issue here going forward is going to be creating a system that will hold up to legal challenges from the players.

Money talks means no one cares about the WNBA or men’s soccer, the fans are the ones that bring the money and therefore make the world go round

Ok I’m not arguing that at all.

Just not following how it impacts the legality of the compensation system for P5 football players.

The only reason the current system is in place is because the players challenged the legality of the previous system.

I’m not smart enough to give the details, but every other league has figured it out.

Then who puts up the money? The players?Owners? Why is the NFL the most wealthy sports league? Is it because it’s the most popular? How much do mens soccer players or WNBA players make in comparison? Fans control sports
