Will get 3-5% 2/1/14.
I did get promoted back in June which was a 15% raise.
Altogether I am 25% higher than where I started at Jan 2012 after graduating.

So if you don't think automatic COLA raises are something your employees deserve you think they deserve automatic pay decreases? By giving them no raise, you are giving them a decrease.

Dude, I'm busting my arse to make payroll. Revenue for raises doesn't just magically appear.

People need to realize that if you aren't paying your good employees somewhere around what the market bears, they're going to skip town and leave you with a real pack of slapdicks running the show.
You think it's hard to hit revenue targets now, wait until the talent leaves.

No argument with with that point, but if the premise of the original post is that a good raise occurs at the first of each and every year, it's wrong. Raises should be based on merit and finacial soundness.

I completely disagree with the annual promotions being soley based on time and not being based on ability.

I got a huge raise and bonus, but it still has me underpaid for the industry. all relative.

I wish. 20%+ base and double digit variable sounds good though.

I work at a project management company. After a year of experience, (which was also a year after graduation) I only got a 2.75% raise. I was kinda pissed at first, but lived with it. Really sucked because a tax went back into effect that year that basically just cancelled it out.
This year the ceiling is supposedly 8%. If I don't get at least 5%, I'm gonna be pretty ticked off.

If they don't deserve a raise, they don't get one. I don't believe in automatic raises. I don't get one. I get them by working harder. If revenue is up due to my extra effort, why the hell should I pay someone more just for being there? BTW my business has grown by at least 15-20%/year for 10 straight years. I have very little turnover. Have only had one leave without being let go and she's begging for her job back.

Fake it till ya make it brah.
Chris Farley got himself a nice raise when he got promoted, but ending up giving all of it to future Chris Farley. Bonus season is around the corner, so hopefully I'll be eyeballs deep in hookers and blow come March 1st.

LOL at all of the recent graduates (i.e. 2-3 years out of school) EXPECTING an annual raise regardless of performance.

Not just recent grads. It's an epidemic. I like performance bonuses over raises. My bonuses aren't tied to my profits but more to an employee's output. If I don't give you a raise or bonus, that's a message. I'm not a cheapskate. So, most figure it out. I've got one now that does the work of three. I'll eliminated two positions and doubled her pay. Some of the others catch onto that and some don't. If you're doing just enough to get by, don't expect a raise.
To the ones hung up on COL raises...cost of business goes up to. If you want and extra 3-4%, then I better get an extra 3-4% effort or else I'm losing money. Why are you lazy bastards entitled to more of my money without any effort of your own. Those of you that don't grasp this will always be unsuccessful. Own a business sometime and get back to us.
