i'm looking to learn about how to read a corp's financial filings and figure out how to guess stock prices, and wondering where the best place to start would be.

Pick a school, find their accounting and finance cirriculums, buy all of the books, read them and actually put effort in to learn it by doing problems and stuff, then learn to start synthesizing. You could also probably find used/old CFA books on ebay for dirt cheap, which will get you most of the way there.

To be honest, I'd recommend taking a class. You don't have to enroll full time or take anything else, but the shite is complicated, and the best way to learn is from someone who makes a living teaching it.....

If something as simple as a financial statement analysis class could teach you how to guess/predict stock prices, there would be billionaires all over.

I just ignored that part and went with an answer to "how do I learn financial statement analysis."

Probably the first thing to do is to learn some basic financial accounting. If you do not know that, you will never understand financials as well as you should.

Speaking of which, I had a guy call me tonight asking to use my accounting textbooks. English major doing equity research who needs to learn how to do cash flows. Talk about a steep learning curve.

You could attend one of my financial statement analysis classes.

Of course that would mean you'd have to travel to Africa, Asia or Eastern Europe to attend it, but I'm sure you'd learn a lot.

I imagine you have to think really carefully about the skills of your audience, my guess is that there's probably some who do know their stuff but that most simply don't have the background no matter how eager they are.
