Looking at the numbers is infuriating. My employer pays $1500/mo for my wife and I to have a high deductible plan. That's a lot of dang money. Yet every month, it sure doesn't seem like the insurance company is doing much for us. I'm still paying every bill from doctors and clinics. And the insurance has rejected requests for 2 prescriptions lately. What an absolute scam.

It’s insurance, not prepaid doctor bills/scripts. What do you get out of car insurance if you don’t get in a wreck this year? What do you get out of flood insurance if your house doesn’t flood this year?

Insurance is about mitigating catastrophic risks/bills.

This is true in theory. But because we have this weird system for using it for non emergencies and catastrophes, it leads to this nutty system of having high insurance costs plus high copays. Wtf

Good thing hospitals use their money on this and not taking care of people.

This isn’t to single out Ochsner, because I’ll bet every system does it

High deductible plans are for Emergencies. They are designed to make you think you will not go bankrupt if you have a major medical expense. Young people are overcharged and old people are undercharged thinks to Obamacare.

They system if fricked up and is not getting better. Just play the game.

For those prescriptions getting denied, talk to your doctor, they probably need to do a preauthorizion, its really scammy and they HOPE that you don't follow through to get it covered. Lot's of offices have someone on staff to handle dealing with insurance companies and will jump through the hoops with you or for you.

Well somebody's got to pay for these people's compensations.

Next go find all of the salaries of the administration at your local health system. Bonus points if it's an HCA hospital

Most employer plans are self funded so insurance companies don't pay the claims.

Yes it is. Who needs health insurance when there is GoFundMe?

My mother in law (58 years old) had $1.5 million in claims last year (lymphoma). Her out of pocket max was $10,000 for the year and she pays $1,000 in premium every month. A friend of mine had a baby and baby was immediately brought to ICU in different city. Can only imagine how much this will cost. This is why you have health insurance.

You have a contractural agreement to not owe money the rest of your life after one bad situation.

I feel like I hear stories of people having insurance still going broke when they get sick like all the time

ETA: watch the insurance companies lobby for the Canada shot here so they don’t have to pay for big claims anymore and they can keep suckering healthy people to pay for nothing every month

As much as it sucks, you’re at least only paying the contractual amount and not the standard rate.

Also, sounds like your employer has a shitty plan option and still having to pay a premium.

I'm not disagreeing at all.

But, on the other hand, it's also okay to be thankful for Not needing it.

Eleven years ago I was dx with this little blood cancer disease. A little pill that retails for about $9k/month keeps me alive and pretty well.

What does BlueCross really pay for that med? I have no idea. But I pay my 1000/month premium so I can get my damn little pill.

The three least trusted organizations to me are our government, big pharma and big insurance. But they are keeping me alive.

Welcome to the world post Affordable Care ACT.

My employer plan went from $250 deductibles to $4000 deductibles in 3 years. AND the cost went up.
My out of pocket max went from $800 to $8000 per person.
