What do you think is a reasonable amount to spend on home furnishings?

I'm moving into a new place and need to furnish it since I gave all my shite away when I left New Orleans.
It's a small 2 bedroom townhouse (~1100 square feet) so I don't have a ton of space to fill.
I'm thinking I can get most of it done on about a 4K budget
I need pretty much everything. 2 beds, some night stands, couch, coffee table, small kitchen table and chairs....
Is this doable on a 4K budget or do you think that's too much to spend?

I think that if you go to somewhere like Home Furniture, you can get it for close to that. I have never personally bought things from there BUT have seen many of their ads where they have "room choice options" for a set price .. a bedroom will typically include bed/dress/chest of drawers/nightstand and a living room might have sofa/love seat/end and coffee tables. I think my brother found some nice things there ... it's just not TOP NOTCH although I think they have quality name brands.
Personally, we have LazyBoy sofa and leather recliners ... those alone were like $2400 but we've had them close to 10 years and still love them. Did have to get new sofa cushion inserts but it was under warranty.
And no I wouldn't think that's too much to spend for what you're wanting to furnish. (eta: if you can afford it ... I think they'll often have 12 months no interest too or something like that. OR put it on a credit card if you have a reward type card, get the points/miles/whatever and then PAY IT OFF!)

Depends on the size of beds and if you need mattresses.
Queen bed (2) - $1000
Queen mattress and box (2) - $1500
Night stands (4) - $1200
Coffee table (1) $400
End tables (2) - $600
Sofa - $500
Table/chairs - $700
I worked in furniture during college and I'd say these are low to mid priced estimates. May be looking at closer to $6000, more if you want king beds. A good king size Sealy mattress set is closer to $1200.

If you get the room "sets" its almost always the cheapest stuff they can put together and knock a bit off.
OP, dont forget dresser/mirror is about $800 and chest is another $400.

Good leather living room furniture could run $10k by itself. Don'go leather.

I'm too cheap to spend that much on a night stand.

Ditto
I'm surprised you have the sofa so cheap with all the other things you listed being relatively high. And by high I mean more than my cheap arse is willing to pay.

Depends on your age and relationship status

Unless you are going to buy crap that won't last long that is a low estimate

You can find really good deals on Craigslist... Just have to be willing to put in the time and effort

Is there an ikea nearby? Would be my go to store for a smaller space. they have some very space efficient furniture for smaller spaces like yours.
I used them to furnish my 700 sqft one bedroom, and the total was about $1800. That includes, a bed frame, headboard, couch, coffee table, tv console, two dressers, a high top table and some kitchen supplies.
Bar stools were given to us as housewarming gifts.
we decided to keep our mattress. Which can run pretty expensive.
I would think you could furnish your place for 4K but not with good mattresses.
breakdown on bigger ticket items
8 drawer dresser: $299
TV-unit: $99
Coffee table: $39.99
Shoe cabinet/dresser: $129
Head board: $130
Bed frame: $249
Counter height table: $149.99
Couch: $600
bed frame + headboard

To save on your beds, buy frames and then a padded headboard...looks nice and reasonable. Find a good consignment furniture shop and get great deals. Furniture depreciates a lot, so used is the way to go....Refinish and it's just like new. Save some bucks. Futon for a couch....

Sam's club and Costco have good mattresses for decent prices

When I got my first real job out of college I dumped all the cinder blocks and boards and dropped about 4K at Kornmyer's. That would probably equate to about 10K today, or more. Watch for things on sale, but buy good quality, particularly in living/ding room furniture. Buy one decent bedroom set for yourself even if you have to let the other bedroom wait until later. Nothing says white trash like a 5K entertainment center and a few sticks of crappy furniture from Ikea or Rooms-To-Go. BTW, I still have a lot of the furniture that I bought for that first apartment.

Yeah I might do that. It's going to be a while before I get settled in and am going to be inviting people over anyway. I'm looking more long term on the second bedroom.

Easily you can furnish it for 4k, but you will have crap. I would suggest spending extra on sofa, occasional chair, mattresses, and lighting and maybe for like 5200 you could have some stuff that may last for a little bit.

Finding good deals on craigslist and such will go a long way on furnishing on a budget.
If you are moving near a military base, you can find a lot of good things in PCS sales too

Got our bedroom set at Home Furniture for about $1200.
Sofa from Craigslist for $600 (was a $2k sofa that was 10mo old).
Coffee table was $300 from pottery barn and the end tables were like $100 each from World Market.
Solid wood Dining room table from Craigslist for $50 from a girl who was moving across the country.
