I have the Amex blue skies card. I recently used it to pay for a ski trip to Whistler. Payed for 2 of our hotel nights, rental car for a week, and lift tickets in Whistler. This was all from only using it to pay my taxes last year, so I feel like a got good bang for my buck.

You're missing something. I can transfer my Amex points out to British Airways and twice a year I get up to a 40% bonus on miles. So 100,000 points transfers out to 140,000 BA Avios.
One of the best credit card rewards benefits out there.

I had over 4 million points at one time. Went to Paris/Normandy.... 1st Class on Continental. Also gave the kids 100,000 points every Christmas for a long time.

Airline miles is the only way to get "best value". Different tickets on same flight can have large fluctuations in price. If you use your rewards points for a flight tkt you could save $300 or $1000 as an example on the same flight. If you get a gift card to a restaurant you won't see that kind of price difference.

Just because you have them you don't have to spend now. Let them ride and who knows what you I'll have in a few years and where they can take you.

That's literally 250,000 points. Or a quarter million dollars spent. Yeah, I ain't ever doing that.

Not hard to get to. I went from zero to 267,000 IHG points in the matter of 1 year. 80K sign on bonus plus plenty of promotions and hotel stays.

During that same time, I went from 0 to 130K on my Marriott card (40K sign on bonus).

My AMEX is a Hilton Honors card so I just use it to stay at Hilton hotels. Usually the Roosevelt if we need to stay downtown for an event, etc.

Letting "points ride" without a plan isn't good either. People need to learn about the points they are earning. Airlines are great redemptions, but those airlines are likely to devalue very two years or so. Gotta strike when you got them or you may be better off with a less volatile cash back card.

In essence, don't be a lazy consumer.

I have a blue cash preferred so I just get a credit in my account. It also can retroactively pay for travel.

It wasn't too hard. 50k bonus for signing up + $3-4k a month for four years, factor in double points on groceries, gas, etc.

And I would volunteer to pay for things at work and get reimbursed. It was easier on my boss. One time I spent 10k at Costco.

I'm sitting at about 35k now.

You did not do things right . You could have had several trips to Vegas.

125k points is 2.5 tickets anywhere in the world if you do it right - and at least 5 trips to Vegas.

I haven't done the details on the points, but 125,000 amex pts would transfer 1:1 to Delta. And Delta flights are about 25,000pts per trip. So that is 5 flights (2.5 round trips).

How did you redeem the points? If you used Amex points to purchase a plane ticket then you did it the wrong way. You need to convert the points to an airline. For instance I can fly to Hawaii for 35000 miles round trip on American if I fly on the right days. That's the equivalent of $350 in points. Buying the tickets outright through a portal costs 110,000 points or the equivalent of $1100.

You have to be a smart consumer and make sure that you use the points correctly to get the best value. If you can get direct flights on a OneWorld partner British Airways Avios are a tremendous value due to the fact that BA bases the miles used on number of segments and distance. A one segment flight on American to Miami only costs me 15000 Avios round trip opposed to 25000 AA miles.

Huh? So I transfer the points to a delta sky miles account? Why can't this shite be straightforward?

I looked at them. I feel I get cheap flights through Southwest, so I really don't care...

I just redeemed my points...drum roll....182 pc Craftsman Tool Set. I needed a good lifetime starter set. Seemed the best place to get one. Saved me $200.

Gotta play the game to win. If you take the easy way out for redemption you are going to get the worst value for your points.
