I’m interested in investing in the vanguard total stock market index fund. I have a few questions. Is that something I can invest in through my Fidelity investment app? Is there a contribution limit or any restrictions at all? Lastly for those who’ve invested in it, would you highly recommend it? I only have a 401K, Roth IRA, Ibond, and HSA at the moment. Thank you.

It's been great for me so far. I pump 2k a month into it and I think I'm up over 10% on the year. Low management fees and a great way to invest

So can I can invest in VTSAX stock through my fidelity investment account or will it charge me? Or is it just better to start a Vanguard account to invest in VTSAX stock?

Fidelity charges $50 transaction fee for non Fidelity mutual funds. They charge zero for ETFs thus use VTI instead. You could go w Fidelity zero expense ratio Total market mutual fund FZROX but the higher distributions versus Vanguard funds are going to be taxable events in a taxable brokerage.

I use Fidelity and 90% of my portfolio is in FSKAX. It is the Fidelity equivalent of VTSAX. There will be fees to buy VTSAX through Fidelity.

You can buy VTSAX through your Fidelity account but there is a fee, maybe $50-75. FSKAX is a total market and FXAIX is a S&P500 fund, you may want to look at FITLX, FNILX, FZROX for low cost expense ratios. If you can tolerate more cost, FBGRX, FDSVX and FLGEX have been doing pretty good.

VTSAX and VTI have the same tax advantages because Vanguard patented a strategy to avoid them in the mutual fund.

Expired this year so other companies will do it soon too I imagine.

Anyway, that's why I was VTSAX because Vanguard didn't allow for fractional shares of VTI and it was all the same.

I assumed they'd charge for the ETF too but I know some don't.

Also, moving funds isn't exactly hard these days. He could even just use Fidelity equivalents if he was married to them.

I have always invested in SPY. Is there any reason to re-allocate to VTSAX?

No.

SPY is an S&P index ETF. VTSAX is a total market index fund. These two will perform nearly identical over the same period.
