It seems pretty straightforward that if we just require Congress to spend at least 10% less than revenue each year then in time, it will work its way down. It might take a long, long time but it's certainly a worthwhile endeavor.

Problem is no Congress will ever agree to that, the only option is for the states to rewrite the rules of Congress to make this happen.

I disagree.
There is a ton of bloat in the federal government.
We don't even need a department of education as an example.

There is plenty of room for cuts without attacking SS and Medicare.

Disagree with what? Facts?

Your own chart shows SS, health, and defense as 59% of the budget. Another 7% on interest (66%).

1/3 of the budget is room for trimming without touching the big 3.

Thanks for making my point for me. As I said, the department of education is an easy 3% to get gutted. The other departments could be more surgical.

I’m curious to hear people’s thoughts on cutting SS. How would you do it? Do you slowly phase it out or is there a better approach? I know it will never happen so I’m just talking hypotheticals

I like to see the math on giving potential retirees a tax advantage benefit on retirement fund withdraws at if they were to opt out of receiving SS. Give people a choice if they have plenty of $$. You may be trading dollars for dollars but it seems we could come up with something.

Could DeSantis be the guy to do it

This guy has done wonders here in Florida. Dont believe any of the BS the national liberal news outlets say about him. They are scared if he gets in the whitehouse he will put an end to alot of their crap.

To get to a balanced budget you’d need to cut out about 75% of all non military/SS/Medicare spending.

You always start by evaluating and cutting the largest %s of your budget first. SS and Medicare. Medicare is particularly a fat hog needing significant cuts, and SS needs to go to the long term self sustainable 80% payouts at most. Old people welfare needs to be cut

If the Republicans take the trifecta in 2024, could they pass a law that says Congress has to balance the budget every year, unless we are at war? That way at least the debt could stay at 32T and not get any worse. Is such a thing remotely possible? Could DeSantis be the guy to do it? I don't think I've heard him talk about the Federal deficits that much.

This isn't a R vs D problem. Both parties spend way too much. They just choose to spend it on items that base typically approves of. There is no such thing as a party that will cut the budget.

I just don't believe this number is accurate. I believe it's a high number. But, the government regulates most of this depth. So therefore it's hard to believe.

Or... chip away and stop the stupid spending.
Then watch GDP growth and inflation take care of the rest.

We've done it before in my lifetime.

Balanced budget amendment

The government can only spend equal to or perhaps a percentage more than it takes in. It is allowed to use debt to fund obligations within strict guidelines.

Raise retirement age for social security to reduce the outflow of money.
Greatly cut back on social security disability. It’s unfunded.
Reduce the department of education.
Reduce the department of housing and urban development.

That's one way.
It might be the most likely way.

I just feel that there are exceptions (i.e. 2020. WWII. Etc..).

If it isn't simple, it will have too many loopholes.
If it has too many loopholes, it will get abused.
If it is too simple, it may do unnecessary harm.

I like the idea of term limits for politicians who cannot balance the budget for half of their term.
No caps on the budget for the other years.

If they can't be a serious politician, they shouldn't be a politician.
