UNH is poorly run. They bought my healthcare company 2 years ago as part of a big strategy for vertical integration of services. Bought clinics all over the country. Then they ran them into the ground. Everyone who used to work at my office is gone now. I’m not sure they are even open. They must have wasted hundreds of millions because of poor management.

Yep. Then they bought Change Healthcare, the largest clearing house for insurance claims in the country, took half arse cybersecurity measures resulting in providers (customers) not being paid for two months. I no longer use them, nor does anyone else I know, and lawsuits are coming from that. The shitstorm for these asshats is just starting.

Congress may try to protect them, but Trump is out for their arse and Humana is next.

Sounds like a few folks here have worked for UNH/UHC/Optum. I still have a few shares (about 50) from when I was there but have sold off a ton. I feel horrible for the lifers over there who have a ton tied up in stock options and grants. When I left in 2022 I had to exercise all of my options within 90 days.

I do think whether people like it or not an unhealthy UNH is bad for the economy. When they tank they will do things like increase denials. Their revenue has been impacted but the CMS risk model change but that has been known since 2023. Their MLR has been rising due to accelerated costs.

I don’t want to try to catch a falling knife. I also think their ability to continue to grow earnings through more acquisitions is stunted. I think the bottom is a bit lower but for folks wanting to DCA this is a really nice entry point.

I was just getting in as you were getting out, so i bought high. There was a minor dip last year and i got nervous about having so much tied up in a single stock since i’m mostly a “Boglehead” type of investor. The ESPP just seemed like such a good deal. But yeah, i can’t imagine if i had been in for 30 years instead of 3. ETA though if i’d been in for decades i’d probably still be way up. The stock price seemed to be rising at a ridiculously fast pace for a few years.

When the Medicare advantage scam explodes into a full on scandal with congressional investigations and historic settlements, UNH will get crushed.

To think i thought this was a safe stock. Anyone else own this disaster close to 500 like me?
Held a position in UNH since 2020. Overall, cost basis ~$305. We were way up.Thought it was safe as well. Now +$5K. 5yrs of gains pissed away in a month. C'est la vie.

Started a position and have been adding with each dip. My cost basis is $360.

This will be a slow recovery, but I think selling covered calls as it regains footing will be lucrative. PT of $400 seems reasonable.

I would be weary about buying this “dip”. There will be a shite load of sell pressure from the major cap weighted ETFs. A stock like TSLA with obscene volatility can survive these drawdowns. UNH not so much. It’s an incredibly low beta stock which I think works heavily against it in this situation.

They’re getting sued by taxpayers right now.

Which will result in a huge fine that the company can’t pay. It’ll dissolve and be merged into another company and either the fine will never be payer back (ie the fraud will never be made whole), premiums will go up to cover it, or the government will bail them out.

Nobody (except the dude that got assisted which is mucho not good, obviously) will actually be punished

No. The first step in fixing healthcare is dismantling UNH.

I don’t see how that’s possible. There’s clearly a coordinated attack on all fronts that’s been growing for 6 months. But, I don’t know how it can succeed without taking the rest of the industry with it.

Humana’s more exposed to Medicare scrutiny.

CVS is more exposed to the PBM scrutiny.

There’s dozens of companies more exposed to Medicaid scrutiny.

If lawsuits start pursuing punitive lawsuits, UNH is also the best suited to weather them. Look at outcomes from the pharmacy suits. They effectively took down Walgreens and Riteaid leaving CVS the last man standing.

Might be a good time to pick some up to try and catch a small bounce back through the week. See if you can get 5% gain then abandon ship.
