I managed to search both boxes and find nothing. Someone had initialed "WM" on the coins with a sharpie, leading me to believe the box was already searched. The lady at the bank had a look of displeasure when I dropped my heavy load on her desk. I've been through three boxes of half dollars, and my first box had 3 40% silver half dollars. These last two were a pretty good waste of time.

If you are in a city with casinos, then you should hit up the casino cashier cages as well as the banks. There are casinos that have had rolled coins sitting in their cages for years that never make it out of the vault.

Reading this thread had inspired me to start a coin collection for my one week old son. I collected baseball cards as a kid and what a waste. I like the idea of getting coins from 100 years before his birth. Seems like 1913 had a lot going on with coins. Any significance to this year in the history of coins? Where are you finding values of non graded coins. I have been checking out ebay and have already bought a great condition wheat penny, but it seems to me that people are paying more than coins are worth in most cases. What's the deal?

There are tons of websites that will give you a general price of a coin in circulated condition or at least the melt value.
Speaking of grading, for the gurus on here, is it worth trying to get some of my pre-1923 silver dollars graded? I've got a few that are in really nice shape, but it looks like its about $30 a coin to get them graded
I mean, the ungraded ones go for $30-40 on ebay and the graded ones, if they are in fine condition, go for $70... How is that worth the investment

I'd like to get about 40-50 coins graded because I think they would be in better than average condition, but the $$$ just don't make sense.

The only thing about 1913 that immediately comes to mind is that was the changeover year for the design of the nickle. The mint stopped issuing the Barber designed "V" nickle and started issuing the "buffalo/Indian head" nickle.
There may be other special aspects of 1913 but that is the only one I know about.
Regarding finding the "value" of ungraded coins, eBay is the largest coin auction in the world so the value of the coins on there is what the buyers say it is, IMO.

That makes sense. It is worth what the market will pay. Kinda hard to know if you are getting a deal unless you keep up with auctions.
There used to be a Site called empire that would let you search old ebay listing for final prices. It doesn't exist anymore, but do you know of a Site like this?

I am not a fan of slabbed (graded) coins and do not own a slabbed item. The reason for this is the majority of my collection was put together prior to the prevalence of the grading services. And, I really don't care if it has a grade or not; I am a collector. Who cares if it's MS69. If it's a good coin and in good condition - buy it.
Buy the coin, not the plastic case.
Also, in order to know if it's in good condition this book is a good reference.

I bid on the coin below early this past week when it was first listed on eBay. At the time I bid, I think the highest bid was $67. I bid $70 and I was the highest bidder for about four hours.
Right now the highest bid on this coin is $465.

I don't see much value in graded coins. I would have a few graded but you generally must belong to one of the 2 big grading associations to get a "deal". And then it's still about $30. Grading is fine but the plastic protects the coins. I actually like touching mine like a fine titty.

I have been reading through this thread and it caused me to go find my 'collection.' It's pretty pedestrian, but I did find two american silver dollars.
I think I am going to get my son into it by doing one of those penny books where you put a coin from each year/mint in.

80's proofs are done. Time to move into the 90's to keep working on my silver eagle proof series.

I think I'm going to try to get a good quality Morgan O dollar from every year they were minted. That's my goal for the next year or so.
