Those of you who work from home, what are some musts for your office?

Obviously the essentials that a normal office would have, but to make it comfortable and to help with minimal distraction, what would you suggest?

I have a very nice space and a desk with a lot of room.

I work from home, out of my attic. I have my computer and phone and a printer, and my wife's nicknacks in the rest of the space.

I'll be interested in this thread, cause I'm doing it wrong.

If you have family at home, you do need ground rules on when you can be bothered and when you can't, maybe a sign on your door to show when you are busy/on the phone, and when you can be interrupted.

Edit: Something I'm poor at is separating work from home, and taking breaks, going outside to stretch my legs and walk the dog at lunch.

Damn

I have a bedroom that’s basically now my office with a TV that my wife uses to workout. Desk, drawer with printer, and TV stand with TV against another wall.

I agree with you about separating home/work. I plan to take a few 15 minute breaks to decompress. I’ll go sit on my back patio, etc.

In the morning, I am planning on going for a run, shower, dress in professional work clothes, and start my day

That's what I had to do when I worked from home. Also set a time to be in the office to start work. I didn't always dress professional, but didn't stay in gym shorts and t-shirt without showering all day.

I didn't really have any creature comforts in the office except a really nice, comfortable chair and a good Bluetooth speaker. I eventually had to remove the TV because it became a distraction, especially during baseball season. Getting out for lunch also helped clear the mind and re-focus for the afternoon.

My only requirements were a comfortable chair, one of those obnoxiously large monitors so I could have a split screen, and a docking station. We have a spare bedroom I’m set up in. No TV or anything, but I’ll listen to music on my phone when I’m not on calls. I go in the office 2-3 days a week so it’s a good balance. My days at home really allow me to crank through work without the distractions of the office.

I had a huge desk (old door that I turned into a desk) before we had kids. Now that we have kids, there really isn't much room except for a small desk in our guest bedroom. (saved the door/desk in storage, hoping to break it out one day later on in life).

Usually though I'll take my laptop and work in our living/keeping room when the wife and kiddos aren't at home. Lately I've been working outside on our patio or in the hammock.

Summer is quickly approaching....so I'll be spending more time in the back guest bedroom, with my laptop hooked up to my iMac for a larger display.

Also, its worth it to leave for a few hours in the morning to hit up a coffee shop or something.

To answer your question, if you do a lot of calls, easy to wear wireless earbuds (like AirPods) are amazing. Usually my calls don't last longer than an hour, so they don't really ever end up dying on me.

I work out of our second living room. It has a sofa, a chair with an ottoman, a couple side tables, a coffee table, and a TV. It doesn't sound like that's the office feel you're going for

I would like to set up my dual monitors, and maybe get a standing desk. I eventually may make one of our other bedrooms into an actual office, but this has worked for me for the last 2 years.

I've worked from home for 6 years now and I've never set up an actual office at home, I also don't do the whole ritual of dressing like I'm going into the office, etc...I typically put normal clothes on around 10am or so

Yeah I don’t think I can make something like that work. I need to be in a structured environment to focus.

Epic, you live in Lafayette? What line of work are you in?

When I lived in New Orleans I would often work on my balcony, or go hangout at the Fly and work when the weather was nice. Now that I'm in Lafayette, I don't have a balcony or a nearby park, but I do sometimes go outside and work near my pool.

I have some wireless Beats that I use for my calls, I find that much better than just using my speakerphone (which is what I used to use).

Nice

I’m not a big TV person. I might have it on as background noise, but I don’t see it being a distraction

Nice old desk
Multifunction printer/scanner
2 monitors and laptop (third monitor)
Jabra bluetooth headset.

I generally work in comfortable clothes.
I have a large coffee (36 ounce) and large water (48 ounce) to give me fewer distractions (i.e. the disappointment of being on a call and out of coffee or water).

I usually eat lunch at my desk (unless the wife comes home for lunch)

I've worked from home for 3 years now. I've given the kids "the look" that they know not to make noise around my door.

No one else at home.

Been working from home for 6 years. My wife used to be off on Fridays which wasn't bad. Now she's off on Wed's too. Aggravates the crap out of me.

Also, not sure how much yard you have but a nice view goes a long way.

I have been working from home since the first of the year
I am set up in the living room in front of a big window looking into the yard (live alone)
Built in book cases next to window come in handy
I keep the tv on a music channel during the day for background noise

I learned real quick to have extra ink on hand, there isn’t a supply closet when you’re at home

I’ve been working from home for almost 10 years and it has started to get stale for me. The dedicated space gets filled up with everyone else’s stuff and gets annoying when everyone gets home early and I have to manage noise levels. I’m thinking about going and finding a dedicated office space outside of the home now.

Well, my real home office is the kitchen (side hustle is baking for farmer's market), but I doubt you're using 19 sheet pans in one day like I do. Most important equipment in that home office is three sinks. LOL.

Extra bedroom is non-kitchen office. I had it set up as a second guest room w/spare bed, but realized no one slept in the damn thing, so I removed the bed. Much more pleasant to be able to float the desk in the center of the room, where the natural light from the window is best. I added a rug and some art on the walls.

But the most important thing, to me, are noise-cancelling headphones. Even when no one is home, the annoying small noises of traffic, trash truck, AC, fridge compressor, etc can be magnified. In a busy office, it's easy to tune out background noise. In a quiet space, the little noises become huge. And if you're working while there is plenty of other (more fun sounding) activity going on in the house, they're necessary.

I live in NYC where it’s not worth paying for an extra room just for my office, so I usually rotate between my bed, couch, and recliner throughout the day. If I’m on a video call, I’ll sit at the kitchen table. So, for me the musts are a portable laptop, comfortable pillows, and good wireless headphones.

At this point, I don’t think I’ll ever have an office in my house because I probably wouldn’t use it.
