I've been a loyal turbotax user for the last 7-8 years, but H&R Block gets good reviews and it's quite a bit cheaper.

I also see Credit karma has free online prep, which includes more than just the EZ forms.

All of the softwares now seem to accept each others file types to be able to prefill a lot of the data, so I don't consider that a major perk to any particular one.

I'd like to know who uses what and what is your decision based on?

H&R Block is good, but they’re not cheap. It’s usually upwards of $450 to file, depending on your return and deductions.

i assume you are thinking of the brick and mortars, and not the HR Block software

i don't think they charge you for the different forms, as long as you've bought the proper version for your needs

I've done Turbo Tax (Deluxe) for pretty much as long as I can remember. Many years ago I tried some others...Maybe Tax Cut and Kiplinger's if I remember right. They weren't terrible, just not quite as polished and intuitive in my opinion.

Since then I've gone back to and stuck with Turbo Tax, at $39 it's tough to beat.

Last two years I've used "TaxACT"

It is completely free and online.

They try to upsell you throughout the process, just decline whatever add-ons or services they pitch.

I use H&R Block software. They had a "50% off" sale this weekend. Got fed and state for $29 after tax. I've used it for about 5 years now with no complaints but I have a pretty simple return most years.

I likely only need the deluxe.

I have some investments and interest income, along with W2 income for wife and I.

No side businesses, rentals, etc.

I will keep an eye out for the best deals.

I may give the credit karma a shot also.

TuboTax. Been using them since I started working 15+ years ago. I don't use the online version though. Luckily I get the Premiere version free from Fidelity.

I'll note that I intended to us HR Block but it does not handle Married filing separately in a community property state well at all.

TurboTax doesn't explain it well either but it at least prompts you to do things that make you think "something's up"

So I'll be TurboTax this year

How do you get it free from fidelity?

I have about 4 fidelity accounts but haven't looked for it.

Been using TT for many years now. I'm aware that it's more expensive but not by enough that I care to fool with using something else.

TurboTax Premier. It is $69 instead of $89 this week at Office Depot. Bought it yesterday, installed it today.

There is a whole thread on this subject over on the Bogleheads forum. The criteria to qualify isn't exactly known. People who have 7 figures and designated as premium services don't always get it.

It looks like if you are designated Active Trader that you are guaranteed to get it (which I am). Log into your account and go to the Summary tab and look on the page for free TurboTax.

Used them last year...I have no complaints. But my taxes are pretty straightforward. I did turbo tax too just to compare and the refund was within a couple bucks. I'll use Credit Karma once again this year.

It looks like Capital One is offering me free filing with H&R Block's Premium software? The offer shows up when I log into online banking. Sounds like the trade off is that they use this info for more targeted marketing but claim they wont share with any third parties. Any one else seeing this or taking advantage of it?
