My wife recently passed and was receiving SSDI checks monthly for her brain disorder. Am I eligible to that now that she has passed? Or her regular social security check that she would have been getting? In Louisiana if that matters. Thanks

When a spouse who had been collecting Social Security disability benefits passes away, that benefit is sometimes passed onto the surviving spouse if they meet certain criteria.

Remember that each person's situation is different, and if you have any questions about whether or not you'd qualify to receive Social Security disability after a spouse passes, you can contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to a Social Security representative.

Thanks. Looks like I just might qualify. However I have my own claim pending for SSDI since last August of last year. Not sure if that would effect it.

And I plan on filing regular social security in January because I will be eligible as far as age goes. I need to start drawing this because I have terminal cancer and don’t have more than about 18 months left

You've been very candid about you and your late wife's medical diagnoses. All the best to you and your family! I'm sorry for your loss.

Man that’s awful.

My anecdotal experience is that SSDI recipients seem to one another at very high rates, probably because of fraud, but your situation is obviously legitimate. Sorry for your experience and the shite hand you’ve been dealt.

You should be able to draw if you’re older than 60 and until your claim is processed. Obviously timing is important here so getting something quickly is better than waiting on the “right” amount that’s pending your disability claim.

Jesus.. sorry to hear this for you

I am curious, and this may be in bad taste, but I’m curious… of course none of us make it out alive.. but what’s that feeling like… when they tell you only have x amount of months left? Is it scary to know ? Or is it a weight lifted off of you that you know the end is near?

Again this may be incredibly in poor taste but I’m fascinated at the psychology of this .

I don’t mind sharing. I am at peace leaving this earth. When I was first diagnosed, I really didn’t even cry. With all the bricks that I had been hit in the face with, in regards to my wife’s past 4 years slowly going downhill, it really didn’t hit me hard. I had done all I could for her up until the day she passed anyway. My two children have their way in life set. I hope I don’t have to spend the rest of my life fighting with courts(wife) and on the phone with Social Security. Going to do some things I have put off for too long. Traded in a 10 year old Camry I had and bought me a truck 3 weeks ago. Going to visit a close friend of mine in Alabama in a couple of weeks. As much time as possible with my 2 grandsons that live 2 miles from me. They are 8 months and 2 years old. The number of my friends and former coworkers that showed up at my wife’s funeral blew me away. And to top everything off, it looks like I will be moving from Nashville to Jacksonville by the end of the year. I have moved 1 time in the last 21 years and now I will have moved 2 times in 9 months. It was pretty weird picking out your own casket and funeral plans. I highly recommend that if you have the financial ability to pay for this ahead of time, do it. I am an only child. I couldn’t imagine having to go through what I did, having all that added on top. Another recommendation would be not to take the little things you do with your spouse for granted. Don’t have any regrets. Cherish the laugh of your child or the simple kiss on the cheek of your wife when you leave to go to work. Right before they closed the casket with my wife the other day, a placed a red rose next to her and told her I would see her soon. I will fight as best I can but I will always know that she will meet me when I get to heaven

I am sorry about your loss. You should be very careful about taking the advice of a Social Security representative. They have been known to give the wrong advice. I would contact someone who specializes in this area.

When my MIL died her SSDI payments ceased, his SS remained the same, and he got the standard $255 death benefit check. That was it, nothing over his monthly SS benefits.

Have you looked at the compassionate allowances list to see if your diagnosis qualifies? SS has a list of certain fatal diseases that, if you fit, speed up the process. LINK

Twenty—-I have been fighting for a year now for a disability check for myself. Turned me down first claiming I was capable of working????. I have appealed and the latest is they want me to go take a physical on Oct 2nd. I have neuropathy in both feet and 1 hand. Also in physical therapy for my lower back. The tumor is at the base of my spine. I turn 62 in January. Don’t know my best option but it ain’t the disability one. They could keep dragging that out till I pass away. Am I eligible to my wife’s no that she has passed? Should I just go ahead and apply for my own since I can start receiving it in January?
