The vendors would increase the price about 50-75% as soon as they found out what the event was.

My wife is a wedding photographer and I've helped out sometimes. That markup is for having to deal with the hassle of making the"perfect day" and dealing with Bridezilla requests

That and people are willing to pay

She was into cheap rings, which was nice, but I haven't been able to sell her on just eloping.

You need to be smart about this and inception the shite Out of her

- Talk about how all you want is something "timeless" and show simpler classic examples -> Dont overpay for trendy bullshite extras

-Talk about how how gaudy "too much" flowers are and it is really tacky -> Floral budgets can be insane

-Research Wedding Photography/Videographers: You can find some excellent "underpriced" aNd price doesn't mean quality

-Remind fiance no one remembers the food so get the minimum -> Some morons buy steak for their guests. You really want to spend $75 on your shite uncle you hate?

This seems like an awful lot of work and planning to blow the whole load for one evening at a wedding.

i have good financial sense, but i am definitely completely irrational on my weddings plans. im going to drop cock on that reception. only do it once, might as well make it the wedding that everyone will remember

Spend less than you earn. If you want to get a little more technical, the best way to save even more money than that is to spend even less than you earn.

You're welcome.

I thought only the japanese were this crazed.

Put it toward down payment on a house for them.

I do not set aside money for this type of thing.

I save for retirement.

I did save some for kids college, but after I maxed all retirement accounts.

Budget for a wedding. Save for retirement.

Weddings are a gigantic waste of money. You can have an awesome celebration between two families for a few grand.

I won't be shelling out for my daughters' weddings but I'll cover the reception or something. My kids will understand the value of a $ and know better than want a giant, expensive wedding.

The reception is the expensive part.

And kids can understand the value of a dollar and still have a big wedding. The size and expense of ours was what our parents wanted.

The only life event this would be true for is your funeral. We attended someone's third wedding last night.
