Did a search & see there is a 500 page thread on rewards but couldn’t find a thread specifically about miles. Current card I use is awarded cash back but was thinking of opening a 2nd card to start accumulating miles. Anyone have a recommendation as to which card would be best? Most of my travel is via United.

I just signed up for the delta platinum amex card. Got 80,000 miles for $3k in 3 months.

It's a $250 yearly fee, but those 80k miles bought a $1600 ticket to Belgium for free. The way I look at it now is the card is free for 6 years

It also includes a companion pass for any domestic flight every year too in addition to the typical perks.

Every now and then Southwest will offer the companion pass for 1 year when signing up.

Basically one person can travel with you for free.

I had it for 2019 but only used it maybe 2-3 times for my wife.

Capital one venture or venture one if you don’t like the annual fee.

There are a lot of factors to consider and it greatly depends on your travel habits. I would do some research here first and come back with a more educated question.

Kind of related: currently have one cc, citi 2% cash back something or other. Right now we’re saving the cash back for a family trip to Europe in 2022. Should I also get an airline card to get points for our flights or just plan to use the cash and work the cheap airfare websites? I assume points would give us more flexibility but don’t really know how it works.

I think you are doing it right unless you fly a specific airline a few times a year and use same airline every time.

We rarely fly. We flew to Disney last week and before that I think my last flight was Italy in 2016. Maybe a few random Houston flights for work.

United is doing a 100,000 mile sign-up bonus promo right now. I would jump all over that.

If you use the United Club more than 8 times a year, spring for the United Club Card. New one just opened at MSY.

Otherwise, I would get the Sapphire Reserve which doesn't tie you to a specific airline.

It really depends on what you spend money on, how much the points are worth and who you are getting them through.

As an example, Chase points are worth quite a bit and you can use them for multiple airlines, but you only get 3% on travel expenses.

Airline specific credit cards might give you more miles, but then you're stuck with only those airlines which may not have great options for your destinations.

Where did you see 100K at? Looked last night at Explorer card & am seeing 60K.

To answer other questions, typically fly 1 or 2 times/year and almost always United.

I got United Mileage plus card a few back, I have flow the wife and I, to Europe round trip twice for free. Plan to go back next summer. It is a really good card if you want to fly international.
