I received a random check from the IRS today with no explanation. It looks legit to me and is similar to the check in this image: LINK

It's only $6.04 and the date at the bottom has 12/2012 but if it isn't cashed within a year the check is void. There isn't anything else in the envelope that describes what this is from. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be?

That image is just a representation of what the check looks like, not the actual check.

My mom (no pics) used to say when receiving $5.00 class action checks in the mail, "I'll give you $5 to throw that in the shredder."

It might be a scam to get your banking information. We used to see that stuff all the time at the bank. If your not expecting it contact the irs or throw it away

That would be coming from the 2012 tax year. Did you pay some interest or something in 2012? You can call the IRS and ask but for $6 it might not be worth your time.

What is interesting is that 2012 refunds can only be claimed until April 18th of this year.

IRS doesn't generally send letters with checks, but they do follow up later with an explanation.

May not be from the IRS, it is from the US Treasury and the IRS is only one of the agencies that the US Treasury writes checks for

Look at the top right corner below the check number and it should give a brief description of what the check is for

I got a refund once. I called and they said I "overpaid". Three or four months later I got a letter saying they should never have given me the refund, and now I owed the original amount plus interest.

This was the State of Mississippi...

I got a random bill in Dec. from 2013 stating I owed 36.30 from interest not paid. I filed an extension that year so I figured it was was probably right b/c I owed money for 2013. I paid it. 4 weeks later I got a refund for that amount.

Mine said 2013 refund.
