If ETH hits 150k it either means the dollar has gone the way of the Venezuelan bolivar or me and my fellow crypto brothers in arms are living on a moon mansion watching asteroids go by

so what am I missing, I suppose it's early but it still looks inflationary to me and gas is still high?
Posted on 8/5/21 at 10:54 am to rocket31
It's supposedly deflationary after PoS upgrade. It's still inflationary until then. London fork + HODLing for staking is supposed to be the deflationary mechanism. We'll see.
Gas prices may still be high, but they are hopefully more predicable.

The way I understand it this only reduces the issuance by 30% on average.
Like bitcoin reduces issuance with a halvening... this is half of a halvening.

You have to burn more than 2 ETH per block to be deflationary, which like you said will be after POS.

BTC has joined the land of green today ^^

I highly doubt ETH goes to 150k. In the near future anyway. If it does, good chance BTC is a 7fig tendie.
That said, I would love that by Christmas

Boom. Looks like it was a shakeout? Who the hell knows… action looking much more promising lately though

EIP-1559 was never going to lower gas fees, just make them more predictable by changing how gas is calculated.
It did implement the burn mechanism, but it's not yet deflationary. EIP-1559 will probably drop ETH inflation from ~4% to maybe 2-3%. Once PoS is implemented, inflation will drop some more. I'm not sure if that's when it's supposed to become deflationary, or if it still needs to hit a certain threshold of chain activity. I think there's a threshold of fees burned (chain activity) that has to be met for it to be deflationary.
ETH gas reduction will come from the move to PoS and the implementation of sharding. That said it'll never be very low. ETH will probably always price out retail investors if they are moving money on chain and not on a roll-up or side chain.

interesting but i'm reading all over Twitter that NFTs are causing the high gas fees so this is all temporary?
you do seem informed with this so I'll take your word for it
however, i'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around people using eth when L2s or other chains like Solana will offer lower fees

Theres some truth to that, when certain spaces within the network explode gas goes way high for a while, but my point is eth will probably never be as low as like..cents to transact. Never will be BSC cheap.

Retail shouldn't and probably won't. Whales and institutions will want the network security that most of these sidechains and Rollups can't provide

As a 70/20/10 BTC/ETH/ALT guy should I be buying ETH here or wait it out? As a long term Hodl.
