Over the last month: -$1.37 (-7.19%)

Nintendo is planning a worldwide release of its new console, code named "NX," in March 2017. The initial plan was to release it in time for the 2016 holiday season, but Nintendo said they wanted to make sure it had a strong game lineup to introduce in conjunction with the release of the console, and that was the reason for the delay.

In addition to continuing its console franchise, Nintendo is just getting started into the mobile games arena. Nintendo released its first app/game in March, called "Miitomo," which can be best described as a simple avatar based social network.

LINK

The most recent information I can find on Miitomo shows it now has 10 millions users.

Nintendo plans to release two more mobile games this Fall, Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing. Without getting into detail about each of these games, they both seem to be perfect for touchscreen play. I have confidence in Nintendo's ability to supply fun, easy to play, and addicting mobile games now and into the future.

Based on the limited info available and conjecturing, it seems like NX is going to be the "next step" in Nintendo gaming. Just how Nintendo took the step forward from the SNES to N64, and from the gamecube to the Wii, NX may just be the next "big one" for Nintendo. The Wii was released in November 2006, and here is the stock's performance during that time:

For some perspective and balance, here is Nintendo's stock performance when the Wii U was released in November 2012:

With the NX being more like the release of the Wii than the Wii U, and the fact that Nintendo is just in its infancy in the mobile game arena, I'm thinking this stock is a good bet. The stock dropped 11% since late April when it became known that the NX would release in 2017 and not this holiday season. Over the long term, pushing back the release date a few months in negligible.

Thoughts?

I loved Nintendo as a kid, I just think they have a hard time competing with consoles and computers, and I don't want to own stock in Sony or Microsoft either. Maybe if they take on Super cell and own mobile gaming

But OTC market and extreme low volume...I've watched it since around $12, but those things I could never look past.

Edit: nice work. You should do it more often

People like us who grew up on NES, SNES, and N64 are now adults on their smartphones 24/7 and buying their own kids Christmas presents. The question is whether kids these days want the Nintendo experience or do they just want the first person shooters and realistic sports games? I think Zelda, Mario and the like will always have their place, and the NX may be able to win over the new generation or at least be a go-to option for parents who don't want their kids playing games like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty.

Today's adults are prime target for Nintendo smart phone games.

Yeah, it's not optimal, but if I think there's value it's not going to stop me. Granted, I'm also not a huge investor putting tens of thousands into a single stock.

Reading more into the recent happenings of Nintendo, I found that Nintendo has yet to release an original Zelda game on the Wii U, as it has kept pushing the release date back. Wii U Zelda, NX Zelda, and the NX console are all going to be released in March, 2017. That is a LONG time for fans to wait for a new Zelda game, the anticipation is going to be huge. That should help boost NX sales. Zelda is Nintendo's 4th best selling franchise, behind Mario, Pokemon, and Wii Sports.

Nintendo NTDOY 1.95% is eyeing ways to get into the film business at some point within the next five years, said Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima during an interview with Japanese publication Asahi on Monday. The comments were followed by an Associated Press report saying that Nintendo won’t become its own film studio and instead would rely upon film companies to take its characters to the silver screen, echoing the earlier report from Asahi.

...Nintendo is...pushing for 3D-animated film, which would be more in the vein of Pixar films.

The concept is part of a broader push by Nintendo to expand its ailing business outside of just video games. The Japanese company, which saw its profit plummet by 61% year-over-year to $148 million in the fiscal year ended March 31, has been suffering from weakening demand for its hardware. In response, Nintendo has ventured into smartphones, though it hasn’t committed its biggest characters, like Mario, to mobile devices. Nintendo also has plans to launch new hardware, currently codenamed NX, next year in the hopes of bolstering its core business.

What is clear, though, is that games might play well in film. On Monday, Rovio, the company behind the wildly popular mobile-gaming franchise Angry Birds, announced that its first full-length feature film The Angry Birds Movie grossed $43 million in its opening weekend in Europe. The film premiered in 74 markets and, according to the company, was able to knock Captain America from the top spot in 37 of those markets. The film will premiere in key markets the U.S. and China, among others, this weekend, which should bolster its earnings.

Does this mean we'll finally get a sequel to the critically acclaimed Super Mario Bros. movie?

According to a proposal to amend its Articles of Incorporation—a document that outlines a company's purpose—Nintendo wants to add "development, manufacturing and sale of medical devices and health devices," as well as "development, manufacturing and sale of computer software."

The document also includes additions for "management of and investment in restaurants, dining halls [and] cafes," as well as "licensing use or reproduction of copyrighted works" and "licensing use of trademarks," the later of which makes sense, given the company's plans to enter the movie business.

One week in the books and the bet on Nintendo is looking good so far. 5 straight days of $gainz. I got in at $17.85 on Monday (it closed at $17.69 on the previous Friday).

Over the last week:

Nintendo (NTDOY): +0.81 (4.58%)

Compared to:

Sony (SNE): +0.32 (1.23%)
Microsoft (MSFT): -0.46 (0.9%)
Activision Blizzard (ATVI): -0.76 (1.98%)
Electronic Arts (EA): -2.09 (2.78%)

2nd week in the books, and after a strong first week the stock retreated some (-0.50, 2.70% over the last week).

Over the last 2 weeks:

Nintendo (NTDOY): +0.31 (1.75%)

Compared to:

Sony (SNE): +1.90 (7.27%)
Microsoft (MSFT): +1.24 (2.43%)
Activision Blizzard (ATVI): +1.05 (2.74%)
Electronic Arts (EA): +0.50 (0.66%)

This week we got some more information on Nintendo's first mobile app/game, Miitomo. While it had strong download #'s when it was released, it has not retained users at a good rate. I downloaded and messed around with the app myself, and it's very basic and dare I say "boring." It makes sense that it didn't retain users very well. However, Miitomo isn't even really a game, it's a kiddie social platform. If Miitomo can generate a ton of downloads that rival the giants of the mobile games arena, just think of how successful popular Nintendo games will be once they are available.

And this happened today:
quote:

In Gamestop’s latest financial briefing, which took place earlier today, the company’s Executive Vice President Mike Hogan said that he believes the Nintendo NX will be huge. According to conservative estimates, the company expects the console to bring in at least $7.5 billion in revenue in the console’s first 26 months, which is roughly half of what the original Wii brought in. Keep in mind that this is a conservative estimate, so the company expects the console to perform even better.

Gamestop Exec: “Nintendo NX is Gonna Be Huge!” Could Bring in $7.5 Billion in 2 Years

Despite the 2.70% drop this week, I remain bullish on NTDOY.

This week, NTDOY bounced back a little, up 14 cents (0.78%).

Over the last 3 weeks:

Nintendo (NTDOY): +0.45 (2.54%)

Compared to:

Sony (SNE): +1.83 (7.01%)
Electronic Arts (EA): +1.16 (1.54%)
Microsoft (MSFT): +0.71 (1.39%)
Activision Blizzard (ATVI): -0.48 (1.25%)

News from this week:

quote:

Nintendo has reportedly delayed mass production of its NX console in order to factor in Virtual Reality functions and improve the system's unique "console and handheld" integrated gaming experience, according to DigiTimes.

Sources close to the production chain have stated that the console combines domestic and portable gaming functionality, which has long been rumoured. It showcases a 5 to 7-inch display with a controller and joystick for users to play as a mobile gaming platform. NX is also able to connect to a TV and operate as a traditional "domestic" console.

The sources have claimed the supply chain received Nintendo's order to start developing the case mold for the NX in the middle of last year, and was told that the console would enter mass production and launch in the middle of 2016. Nintendo's new mass production schedule means that some key components will still be produced this year, but full mass production won't begin until 2017.

Another report states that Nintendo's order volume has been reduced. The plan was originally for 20 million units in year one, but Nintendo's new target is around 10 million units. Sources claim the change is down to the fact that the Wii U has sold poorly and the console market is considered to be "shrinking" - although with Sony's PlayStation 4 passing 40 million units sold this year, that last point seems a little inaccurate.

Just stumbled across this thread. With E3 coming up in a couple of weeks, what are the odds we can see a spike increase with the price per share?

No clue. I do know that Nintendo has said that they will not be revealing the new NX console at E3. They will be revealing the new Zelda game for Wii U and allow people to play it. They will be releasing this Zelda game on NX at the same time they release it for the Wii U next year, supposedly.

There is a lot of anticipation for Zelda since Nintendo has not released an original Zelda game in years, and it will be the first one for the Wii U.

If I had to bet, I would bet there will be more of a spike later in the year when Nintendo starts releasing actual mobile games (as opposed to the social app Miitomo it has already released). A lot of people are speculating the NX will be revealed around the same time the mobile games are released this Fall.

As I've stated in this thread, I like Nintendo for 2 big reasons:

1) The NX - I'm betting it's the next "big one" like Wii and N64.
2) Nintendo is in its mobile games infancy and I predict they are going to be very successful in this arena.

A third reason is that the current management seems more inclined to relax their tight control of the IP to chase income, so they're going to be doing more licensing deals. For example, these Nintendo-themed Vans shoes were just released - https://www.vans.com/article_detail/nintendo.html

Also, as already mentioned in this thread, Nintendo is planning to do movies in the next few years. Angry Birds movie has done very well, and I think Nintendo character movies could do similarly well in today's movie environment. Think of a Pixar-esque Mario movie in 3D.

However, there are a lot of people out there who think Nintendo is dying a slow death and think they should just focus on supplying games to Sony and Microsoft and get out of the console wars. I think that sentiment is an overreaction to the poor performance of the Wii U, which I think was simply a marketing failure and is not entirely indicative of Nintendo's future potential. If Nintendo learned from the Wii U mistakes and vamps up/cleans up its marketing for the NX, and the NX delivers something different and exciting to the console market, I think the NX will be a big success.

Yep. Not sure what value this has, but JP Morgan Chase issued a report today giving NTDOY a "buy" rating - https://www.americanbankingnews.com/2016/06/08/nintendo-co-ltd-ntdoy-now-covered-by-jpmorgan-chase-co/

Smart phone game Pokemon Go was released yesterday and is getting a ton of positive attention. So many people are trying to download and play it that the servers are having a hard time keeping up. Today had the highest trading volume day since October 30 last year. Up 6.69% today and is now sitting at $18.81 (up 6.3% since I made this thread).

The new Zelda game was probably the most talked about and applauded thing coming out of E3.
