Yes I searched, but a lot of the threads I found were older.

I'm looking to purchase silver coins just to have in a SHTF scenario. Not really looking for any type of special commemorative coin, just pure silver.

What is a good % above spot to buy at?
What is a good online/local place (New Orleans area) to do so?
Anything else I need to know since I have no experience with precious metals?

Not really looking into this as an investment, just a hedge against life as we know it going up in smoke. Unless the value of silver tanks ridiculously, I'm not too worried about the slight price fluctuations.

apmex.....buy no more than $5K worth, the economy will never truly tank and our dollars be worthless....thats just a joke to consider bc if that happened your silver bars would be worthless

Looking at Apmex right now. The markup is saddening

Silver would need to rise 8.6% just to break even on their basic Apmex 1 oz silver coin

just like anything else, use a reputable seller. I go to local coin auctions with my gradfather and buy every now and then. He is a gold/silver horder though.

Damn, those ebay people think silver is still over $30! Granted, I'm not looking through 10,000+ listings, but every one I see is $32+

How much over spot? What is a good target to pay over spot price?

ETA: They actually have the best price I've seen so far. $1 over spot LINK

I buy silver eagles from Gainesvillecoins.com They seem to have the best prices.

Buy professionally graded coins by PCGS or ANACS(the top of the line service). There are other grading services such as ICG that are decent graders.

Be careful from buying off Ebay or other unknown sources, scam artists have found an alloy that passes the old magnet test.

ETA: HSN, Thecoinvault, amoung others are real pricey...

Since I'm new to the metals game, my question is why buy Silver Eagles when it is the same amount of silver, yet higher price than the other 1oz silver rounds?

I purchase sliver eagles more for their looks and intrinsic value.

And in the event of a 1930s Germany type devaluation of our currency, it would be easier to barter/sell an actual coin rather than a 'round'.

Most people purchase PMs as a store of value or a hedge against inflation

I have several 'semi-rare' coins and their value has more than doubled in the last few years. Its hard to get that rate of return in the stock market.

Plus, they make nice Christmas and other special occasion gifts. Give a child a silver eagle, they have stars in their eyes. It will be something they will cherish the rest of their life.

Good luck.

silver eagles are the most common form of silver so I guess in a SHTF scenario they would be more tradeable...

I actually sold a few silver eagles I had sitting in a drawer for 32+ on eBay a few weeks back, transaction was quick and painless

I need to decide if $31.48 for the Silver Eagles is worth it more than $28.77 for the silver rounds.

well I'm not a PM guy, but I would think the silver eagles are your best bet. they are theoretically more tradeable, and the price premium isn't really a big issue because you would most likely benefit from the same price premium in a sale/trade..
