At least Wren is using large font for her anti-scripted textbook. ???
Trying to find the bright side. :(

I told my coordinator when she called what I thought of the "free materials" policy at LSUS. I would encourage ya'll to do the same assuming you feel as I do in that the policy is promoting confusion through the presentation of disjointed and poor quality materials.

Let the down votes commence...

Rosendo, I don't know if you have been on Moodle today, but there is an open revolt. Several threads were started criticizing White. In response, she pulled down all of the forums and sent an email to everyone in the course. She is of course pulling out all of the people who dropped from the class average to make it higher and make herself look better.

Has anyone who has more experience in the program seen anything like this before? Several students were going to contact Dr. Knotts and I will be interested to see how the school handles an attack on their cash cow. At this point, with two weeks still to go before the withdrawal date, over 33% of the class has dropped.

What’s the issue with the course? If it’s something you feel needs to be addressed, reach out to Dr Knotts or Danielle Voumard and express your concern.

@Buck. Just the beginning IMO with this no text format. That's insane if in fact 33% of the class has dropped. It isn't just confined to the newer professors. MADM715 course structure is terrible too. (Giving it a 'D' is being generous IMO). A copy and paste text full of plagiarism and a course project with an abstract setup that many don't have a clue about. (And can't get an answer from Wren over the past week)

The thought of dropping from this program has crossed my mind as well. Will probably stick it out as only have 2 courses to go. With this no text setup, I'd advise people look for a program elsewhere. If just getting started in the program, I'd see if can transfer the credits elsewhere. Program has quickly turned from a good value to "get what you pay for" over the past few months with no text format.

I think it's pretty pathetic to shut down a discussion board because you don't like the feedback everyone was giving you. She is the absolute worst, very condescending to students and very unhelpful. I am managing a B in the class for now but it's been way harder than it should be finding youtube videos, khan academy, and tutors just to stay afloat. I really feel for the people who's money and careers depend on this as their last class. I hope something can be done.

I feel for you guys going through ECON705 with White. A valuable lesson here is to stick with known entities as much as possible and in this case Shaugnessy for ECON705 all the way, best prof in the program to date for me, hands down.

Sounds like its a professor problem. My last class ACCT701 with Ambrosio was good and so is 760 with Meeks.Vines was great in fall AP1 and of course Lin was easy in AP2. I do agree about the textbooks, the one for ACCT701 had a lot of errors but it did not affect his class but i can see how it would affect other classes. I have not taken Wren and now i will definitely try to avoid them.

I wouldn't call MADM715's format my most favorite, but I don't know that it's that bad. I'm learning a lot, and, yes, it's a bit disorganized, but at least the text, for what it is, is readable. The course doesn't have a huge week to week writing load like MADM752 or MADM701, so while the project is a bit stressful, I'm not sure that there's any more work than other courses in the program.

There are a lot of gimme points--the weekly tweets, picking a project topic from a list, picking a 10 word project title, etc. None of which take that much time though, so it's not like the busy work of MADM701 with weekly papers.

Going back to when I started the program, Fall AP2 2016, the complaints there were courses on auto-pilot and too much reliance on Cengage. Hopefully the pendulum swings a bit more toward the middle.

For the folks in White's ECON705, I'm sorry to hear it's such a bad class that so many people are dropping. If I recall correctly, White is a known bad teacher and this thread mentioned her BADM 701 course was a hot mess.

I agree with TigerDragon435. ECON 705 with Shaughnessy has been the best class I have taken so far. His videos and supplemental materials makes the class easy to comprehend, even without a textbook. I would suggest taking ECON 705 with him if possible.

I am currently taking ECON 705 with Shaugnessy and having a hard time solving his assignments. I couldn't ask anyone for help including the professor. Do you guys have any advices?

Attend his zoom sessions. Also his videos of past zoom sessions are very valuable. I do not understand why you can't ask Dr. S for help, he is very approachable and is always glad to help.

This. I would try to get through the reading, video quiz, and normal weekly quiz as early in the week as possible so I could focus on the assignment, because those can take a while to digest and think through. They always took me longer than I expected (or hoped) and working on it off and on across a handful of days seemed more effective than trying to cram all the work into one sit-down session.

While I worked the weekly assignment, I'd typically have his recorded Zoom sessions open and would be trying to work along as much as possible. Additionally, you can and should ask him for help and he's good about responding but he's not just going to give you the answer. He wants you to make some of the mental jumps yourself.

Hey Daily,

Ha. "powerpoints are of low quality" may be the understatement of the year.

How are your impressions now that we're a couple weeks into it. I've been averaging about 1300-1500 words on my assignments. Don't know if I'm overkilling or if that's what it takes to get full credit. Seems odd to just have a list of questions. I feel like I could just copy/paste the paragraph out of the text for each question. Like you said, some of the questions don't lend themselves to discussion as much as a simple answer.

This is my first class at LSUS. How does HCAD 750 stack up to the other classes as far as amount of work / difficulty. The instructor seems pretty disengaged other than reminding people that they won't get credit for any late work.

Quick question for anyone who has Shaugnessy. Does he allow you to use a formula sheet? White has us trying to memorize 30 different formulas.

Over 34% have dropped now. Additionally, the forums are still not back up, so there is no way to ask questions or get assistance without emailing her directly. Going on two days now.

If it continues along this trend, it will end up being a fairly easy class that feels sloppily put together, taught by a largely indifferent professor. That's disappointing because I was actually really looking forward to this course going into it. It is very similar to MADM 701 (a core class) with Tammi Knotts. In fact, I'm pretty sure he was told to basically copy that class because he helped with it last session (or at least observed it).

Writing assignments: I've written between 1000 - 1200 words for the first 2 assignments, though, as mentioned, hardly any of them are conducive to a discussion or elaboration. Most amount to straight up definitions, some of which only line up with the terminology and categories of this specific book he's getting the questions from. The most difficult part is finding sources that even remotely make sense and then trying to tie that into the question. I received an 'A' on the first assignment, but not a 100%. I expect a similar grade on the second assignment, especially since he didn't give us our first grade until a full week later.

Forum post: We're obviously having our first one this week, so I don't know how hard he'll grade them but I feel like the questions are really focused on someone with a job currently in healthcare. As I'm in an MBA program, I was hoping for more of a business slant to it. We'll see how it goes.

Exams: This is the most bizarre part of this class. The majority of the questions come from the slides which are from a different book than the one we are reading. I have a theory as to why this is but I may elaborate on that in a different post. I suspect it has to do with LSUS's free textbook policy. I've done fine on the exams, but I think I'm just going to focus on the slides from now on, even if they don't always make sense, divorced from the textbook they originated from.

Current Shaughnessy students please correct me if this has changed, but Shaughnessy essentially gave us the exam questions at the start of each week and we worked on them until we felt confident in our answers. Then we went into Moodle and put our answers in.

These questions typically involved setting up various types of linear regressions in Excel on data pulled from different sources and frequently took me several hours of work to feel comfortable with. You essentially needed to setup a little model in Excel each week. So, yes...technically we got to use formulas, but I don't think in the way you meant.

(Shaughnessy also had a video quiz (watch a lecture, take the quiz) and a concept quiz each week.)

Sounds like White's class is setup very differently.

Yes that's how Shaughnessy's class is. I like it so far. I am doing well; however, I use regression all the time for work so I am familiar with this and the excel setups so far. I feel bad for you guys in the other class. I can't imagine having to memorize batches of formulas, seems so old school in that does one really retain anything that way? I'm not a fan of the whole memorize, test, mind dump repeat process. I find in those cases I retain and learn very little. I feel like in grad school we should be above that method, but hey what do I know.

Just took the ISDS 705 exam, its everything I'd hoped for and more

The only issue I have is that I need to shower after that ProctorU experience.
