During the holiday season, my family decided to upgrade phones. We decided to switch to AT&T because they were offering free upgrades at the time.

The salesman at the AT&T store guaranteed the phone upgrades would be free on at least 3 occasions. Their TV spot at the time also discussed free iPhone 15s. LINK

Since the switch, AT&T has been charging us for the phones and the total bill is hundreds of dollars more per month than we quoted.

When I call support I just get some ESL customer service person that isn’t helpful, and the salesman won’t answer my calls. They claim to have a contract we signed to pay for the phones, but they cannot produce this to us. Also even if the document does exist, we would have signed it as the salesman was quoting us the price and promising the upgrades were free.

What recourse should I take here? BBB complaint? Reach out to the Consumer Protection Agency?

I don’t even care if I come out behind financially on an attorney or something, I just want to frick them over for lying to us.

These days “free” upgrades require you to trade in a phone. They then give you a trade-in credit on your bill over say, 2 years that adds up to your actual upgraded phone cost. Its the new 2 year agreement of days past.

They tried to pull that shite with me, I switched to Verizon and stiffed them on the bullshite last bill, and ignored all the collection letters for 3 years until they stopped coming.

My credit score survived just fine and I felt great for fricking them right back.

How long has it been since you got them? When I upgraded my phone, they told me I’d be charged a monthly amount for a few months, but would eventually receive a credit and then it would charge/credit the monthly price of the phone each month. It still shows on my bill, but it has a credit for the same amount to zero it out.

I’m not sure if this is what’s happening with you or not, but hopefully this is the case.

This is interesting. It’s been 3 bills so far.

I would have expected the customer service people to explain this if it were the case, but maybe they have no idea. I asked multiple times to be given to a higher rep, but after being transferred around Delhi 3 time, I figured that was a lost cause.

Here’s a link that explains how it worked for me. We did it all online, so we had to send our trade in phones and wait for them to be evaluated before the credit kicked in for our particular plan. It definitely took at least 3 months, maybe 4, before I saw the credit. It is weird/dumb they didn’t explain this to you if it applies.

It’s interesting you bring this up. Recently was sold their new ATT internet Air. Salesman swore up and down it was free two week trial. The day I activated it I got a bill.

ATT is well known for their deceptive sales tactics

Thanks did you get back the early month “equipment” fees you were charged?

We were billed $486.67 on the first month, $262.66 the next two months.

We were quoted $160, but right now I’m just pissed about $75 of the $262.66 being for the phones (“equipment fees”).

So that should be $225 credited on the next bill for the three months we’ve already be paid plus $75 going forward.

I'm not sure this relates to your situation.

But we have dealt with At&t with rebates twice when we just got married (about 15- 20 years ago).
It took 6 months for satisfaction on each of those.

It was such a shitty experience, we've been with Verizon for about 15 years.
I live where the Appalachian mountains meet Lake Lanier (shitty cell service. It's either at&t or verizon).

Good luck with at&t. I'm sorry to hear that their SOPs haven't changed.

BBB complaint

Just wanted to come on here and make my mandatory comment that the BBB is literally the equivalent of Yelp. It has no enforcement power and companies literally don't give a shite about it. A BBB complaint is as effective as a Facebook rant.

Also sorry you got swindled by the AT&T sales guy.

Yep! Once they finally applied the credit, they backdated it from the months I’d paid. I basically ended up with a bill that was nearly $0 that month from all the prior equipment credits.

Thank you. Guess I’ll wait for a couple months before going scorched earth. Frustrating I can’t reach the salesman, but he may not even work there now.

BBB isn't going to mean shite to ATT, your next step should be to reach out to the Public Service Commission.

I had an issue years ago when billing was just starting to be offered as email-only so I had my landline bill set to that. I was using a dial-up pop in another parish but in my area code so it was being considered local (as locality charges were slowly being moved away from). For some reason, that area became long-distance and it hiked my phone bill up from something like $50 to $450. Not expecting that (and being young), I ended up incurring an overdraft fee.

I reached out to ATT, even spoke to a supervisor and the response was "we included the change in your bill when we mailed it to you" and because of that they weren't going to do shite.

It didn't matter that I could look at my email and plainly see it wasn't there.

I worked for a CLEC at the time so I knew to call the Public Service Commission. Within 48 hours ATT called me and asked that I fax them (that's telling the age a bit) a copy of my overdraft charges. They were not only crediting my account for the entire error in charges, but sending me a check to cover my overdraft fee.

As your issue is with cell service and not landlines, I'm not sure how much stroke your PSC person will have but at the very least they should be able to direct you to an agency which can help if they cannot.

If you live in Alabama, you might want to check the consumer complaint dept. Other states probably have a similar dept. alabama attorney general consumer complaint

I would go to the store in person where you bought the phone and traded in the others and sit down with the manager. I also had this same issue when I switched to Verizon from ATT. They all suck

Here is your answer: FCC complaint. Pretty simple and you will have a real person with a decent level of authority call you back in less than 24 hours.
