Been offered a job at a different spot. They reached out to me.

It is 75k versus 90k, so there is a pay cut, but the offered job is similar. The offered job:

-Personal insurance is free (250/mo now)
-Commute one mile (versus 15 one way now, 30 to 40 minute drive on average)
-No nights (1 every 2 weeks now)
-7% retirement contribution versus 2% currently

Any thoughts? Anything not mentioned that I should consider? All opinions welcome.

If they reached out to you tell them what you have to have and that $75k won’t cut it.

Tell them you can for drive for Wal-Mart and make 100k and this ain’t 1995.

When you factor in insurance and gas the gap narrows substantially, not to mention the extra time at home. The retirement contribution is huge because that grows tax free.

What are your possibilities for advancement?

I wouldn't take a $15k paycut, but with the additional benefits if you can negotiate the salary to $85k you're definitely getting a better deal.

They reached out to you, you have the upper hand here.

Why would they offer you for substantially lower then you are currently making? That’s an odd move imo until you are currently overpaid?

The new job benefits are solid, but as said your real choice is which has better upward mobility? I wouldn’t take a pay cut in this job market. I’d stay where you are and look around for a 3rd option or tell the new company you would need at least the same pay to leave.

ETA: another option is take the offer and ask for a raise

never ever do that.

ask for raises? sure

never expect raises and never expect those to quickly get you to the salary you wanted.

do not take lower pay with that hope of the future

many companies are tightwads that will only throw pennies at him for raises.

get your money from the get go or tell them piss off and do not take job. simple.

Not necessarily. When comparing health insurance, you cannot just look at the premium costs. How often do you go to the Dr? What are your copays? Deductibles? Co-Insurance? Out-of-pocket costs? Can you keep your same doctors? Do they both have solid coverage options in your area?

Poor wording on my part. I meant take the offer to your current company and ask for a raise.

ETA: It makes 0 sense not to leverage one the employers. Make the choice. Tell the offering company you are currently making $90k and $75k is a laughable offer for you at this point.

Or if company B has a potentially better future, ask your current employer for a raise or leave.

Employees always BS about not wanting to use an offer for a raise, but the reality especially in corporate America is that sometimes you can't get more money out of our company for an employee without good reason. Underpaying them compared to a proven market is a good reason to give them a raise. Especially if you would be unable to hire someone new for that pay range.

So you want him to go to his current company who is paying him $90k and ask for a raise because a new company is offering him $75k?

This but you don't have to be a D about it...they've probably heard it from 16 other candidates.

If he is on the fence but happy to take the new job, absolutely. Its perfectly reasonable to show a new offer, ready to submit your 2 weeks, and have a professional conversation with your supervisor. If they can't do anything, quit.

As a business owner, I want employees looking to better themselves and their careers. I'm not spending time on Indeed looking at pay scales routinely. If someone is offered a job and they do a good job for me, I'm happy to have a professional discussion about a raise.

You really are retarded. You don't go to your boss asking for a raise because you have a worse offer in hand.
