Had he invested $79M purchase price in S&P500 Index for same period he would have made $13B profit.
Bogleheads 1, Lakers Owner 0
Bet he has/had more fun though!

Dumb take as he was able to bang Playboy Playmates all through the 70s-90s. Can't put a price on that!

Hard to put a price tag on owning the Lakers during the greatest runs in their history. Imagine owning them in LA before Cali went to shite with Magic, Kareem, Worthy etc. And that sale price doesn't count what income he paid to himself and family out of it or other income generated from it. How much would just the experience of owning and having full access and benefits of one of the two greatest franchises in NBA history be worth?

He passed in 2013. Lakers didn’t sell for $10B profit either.

Still not comparing apples to apples either. If you invested the same amount in the S&P, you would be paying taxes on dividends, so you would have to go back year by year and minus the tax bill and take out any income or benefits equal to what he took out of the Lakers (including entertainment value) to be fair. I'd 100% say his return on the Laker's was better.

Wouldn’t bogleheads endorse nba franchise ownership? It’s perpetually profitable and the owners keep 51% of the annual revenue.
At any rate it seems like a steal compared to the $5bil Balmer spent for the forced sale of the clippers.

$10B valuation but they retained 15% as a minority owner.
Are you just going to ignore all of the profit/distributions that the Buss family would have received over the lifetime of ownership?
ChatGPT saying they likely received $50-60M in distributions since 2003 so that's a billion+ (and doesn't account for the 20+ years of ownership prior). Plus, whatever reinvestment.

Doubtful. It isn't broadly diversified. Concentration is one industry. That would be my guess as to the analysis.

Yes.
Facetious layer not coming across I see. In NO UNCERTAIN TERMS is this an apples to apples comparison. It is not.
There is some interesting risk / return over time insights about index funds, in comparison, of asset purchase / sale. Not the current income from asset.
