I still haven't received the federal return, and trying to get info from irs.gov or their app simply tells me that it hasn't been processed yet.

Any suggestions on what to do next?

Something triggered a pull for manual processing. Could be related to the stiumuls payments, could be related to something else.

It's now stuck in the "queue" and it won't move until someone takes action to pull it out.

You are going to have to call them and keep trying to call them until you get someone on the phone. (Call first thing in AM). Eventually you will talk to someone, they will get it pulled, someone will look at it, and it will be resolved.

The IRS doens't have a system in place that automatically "pulls" stuck returns. It has to be a manual pull.

It's insane but this is what you get with 1960s technology.

I'm feeling lucky - due to some mismanagement (by me) we didn't file 2021 returns until Dec of 2022, and without filing extensions in May and August.

Got our refund in Jan of this year and no penalties (so far lol)

ETA: and that was filed by mail since efile was shut down for 2022 by the time we were ready to send the returns.

Fill out a Form 911. It’s easy. Fax it in. You’ll have a human assigned to your case that can actually help you. I do this for my clients and get 100% success every time.

My cpa’s sytem got hacked, eventually found out someone filed in my wife’s and I name. Neither my cpa or calling the irs ever helped getting my 19 & 20 returns. Finally called Clay Higgins, they put a tax advocate on the case and got it soon after.

Unfortunetly the advocate system is breaking down as well. When you get someone assigned, they are great... but it's taking longer and longer to get someone assigned.

I am in the same boat. Expecting a refund of close to $8K. Sent certified letter to them on May 21, 2022 and I received a form letter from them dated February 13th, stating "we have received your correspondence from May 21st and please allow us 60 days to research and respond with our findings"!!!

Someone mentioning staying on hold with them for 4 hours to get your answer?? Part false. I did that and was on hold for 2 hours and finally a girl came on line and basically told me what the form letter said.

If you have any better luck please let me know.
