I no longer trust the 6-8 year life cycle for CFL bulbs

I just replaced the last 2 of the 7 bulbs in my kitchen in less than 2.5 years of use. The first 3 went bad within 1 month of each other right at the 2 year mark.

not a fan of the blue-ish light LEDs give off.
Althought I've never seen an LED lightbulb. Does it do the same?

5 of my 7 "5 year bulbs" have blown out at 11 months.

I want them all out of my house. If you research them, they are only intended to last that long if they stay on virtually all the time; turning them on and off shortens their life considerably.
Also - in my house a light sparked and started smoking; the base had a hole burned in it. Strong odor. Luckily I was in the room at the time. Could have burned down my house. I further researched and found they are not intended to be upside down and do have fire risks similar to what happened to me. I pulled out the halogens that wee upside down and they had browning at the base indicative of a problem. They are gone now.
Amazing how these damn things got pushed through and have so many problems. The older bulbs are cheaper, last just as long imo, and have less risk in my experience.

life cycle for halogen bulbs
Do you really mean halogen or compact florescent? Seems to be some confusion in the thread. The halogens we had for undercabinet lighting on average lasted about 1.5years and replacement bulbs were no better, even using the safeguard of not touching the bulb with fingers when installing.
CFL's are a no go here, the wife can't stand them.

I probably meant cfls instead of halogens. Thanks for pointing that out.

No problem. Supposedly the CFL's contain mercury, too, so I guess the govt didn't really think that through well as usual.

The cfls do contain mercury. I can't believe they are discontinuing incandescents for them. I'll be stockpiling them.

They supposedly are bad in rooms where they are turned on and off frequently for short periods. Quit going in and out of the kitchen so much at night, problem solved. I have yet to replace a single CFL but I don't use them in places like bathrooms. The government forcing incandescent bulbs out is stupid, they have their place too.

I've never had a problem with CFLs. I do think the gov't forcing them on people is going to create this kind of pro-incandescent insurgency. On a reflexive level people don't like being told what to do, especially on minor stuff like this. I can't wait until the border patrol is conducting random searches of cars crossing from Mexico, looking for the hidden stash of 60 watts.

Moved in present home 8 years ago. Put cfl bulbs in all outside lights. Haven't replaced one yet. They burn 8-12 hours each nite.
