I also reduced my personal expenses by $1000/mo between note, insurance and gas.
It was a tough step but I pretty much got a brand new car. I'm down to one car note for my wife.
No,
You got yourself a 1000/mo raise...good for you man.
That's how I looked at it years ago when I was debt snowballing.
Sold my fancy truck for a beater.
Used all that money to pay off a bunch of little shite and my wife's vehicle.
$800/mo raise and no vehicle notes at all for 3 years.
It's so liberating and addictive having no debt.
I do owe now still the house note and a small vehicle note at $247/mo and that's almost paid off and o ly has 70k miles on it.
That one move set me up for where I'm at today. Got ahead of a lot.

No car payments here. I really hope these vehicles last until our kids are done with college. Probably not realistic, but I don't see how we'd ever justify anything given the current costs.
We have 2016 vehicles - A Tundra and an Odyssey. Combined new, I don't think they cost what a new Tundra would cost today.

I don't believe in car notes. We have a paid off SUV for the family and I have a 2002 Sierra 1500 with 62,000 miles on it for when I need to pick shite up.
Just replaced the belts, alternator, spark plugs, trans flush, headlights, and had the a/c recharged.
Runs like brand new and the paint even looks pretty good for a 21 year old truck. I think it should last at least 10 more years.

While I somewhat envy those without a car payment, having something fun to drive has brought me so much joy. Its all about saving first, then using whats left to budget and include things for your own happiness.
I bought a new 2022 g70 and after trade in my note is 3% of my gross monthly salary. Its within budget, insane warranty, maintenance covered for 3 years..
if you really don't care about cars then more power to you!

You know, I expected someone to make this point with a higher end car. Not a Genesis G70.
I have a wife and two kids. A car right now is for my personal enjoyment, not my family's.
This thread isn't just about being financially responsible or reducing a note.
It's about others over self enjoyment. That's the underlying takeaway.

How did you owe more money than you sold it for? Just paid off my Tundra and I could sell it for $30,000 easily tomorrow.

Sweet dig bro.. the 3.3 is pretty sick actually. But you are correct. For better or worse I am single, no kids so car is fine for me. My point was: fun cars are out there that won’t break the bank. Gotta live a little.

I reread the OP and nowhere does he state that. Unless I'm f ucked up.

I had $20K+ equity in the Tundra.

At what point if any do you downgrade your insurance from full coverage to liability?

When I was pulling my race car, I used an older truck that wasn’t worth a great deal and I could replace with cash if anything happened to it. So IMO, I wouldn’t fully cover an older vehicle, that’s not a collectible, and I could easily replace out of pocket.
