The best actual returns for your dollar are to convert points to airline miles if you want to do an overseas flight. I just converted 100k cap one points to Air France miles. Got a flight from MSY to Papeete for those miles ($1k points value). By comparison, the cost of the cash ticket was $1800.

Using transfer partners is always where you will find the most outsized value; luxury hotels; business/1st class plane tickets, etc...
Even then, Hyatt is still the best hotel option to redeem to. Using award searches is the way to go to find good ways to redeem points for hotel/flights that have high value as well.
Also consider using something like sky key for flights after you book to automatically refund you cash/points/miles if they find a lower booking in the process. Just used that for the first time for some flights to Mexico in December.
Originally paid 52,600 Delta Skymiles for 2 comfort+ seats from ATL to CUN in Dec. It found the same flight a week ago for just 37,400 miles. It refunded 15,200 skymiles back into my account, nothing changed with my booking and I pay them $38 for the finders fee (you always pay them in cash, not points/miles).
Think of it like I got 15,200 sky miles for $38; which is an insane deal. they charge 25% of the refunded amount, which they value all points/miles at just 1.0cpp. So 15,200 miles in this case = $152 * .25 = $38 to them.
In the Chase travel portal I've had lots of success with points boost and my CSR. Booked a few hotels for 2.0cpp now.
