yeah, credit card points are cool, but that means you're spending multiples more every day. Sure, some companies let people use personal CCs for expenses, but 99% of people are not spending $10k/mo on their personal card for work.
The bulk of my points were from business spend on my Amex. Generally over $1M a year.

I can find better deals on flights and hotels in the open market than I can on the credit card platforms.
Well, you would be doing it wrong if you think that’s how it’s done. And you’d be wrong about these better deals. Unless you’re cheap.

Now factor in the 50 dollar day lift passes in europe vs the 300+ in America.

Not sure how. We do very well, but we just aren’t inclined to reduce our savings targets for travel. Don’t even really have a plan on what to do with our savings. We just don’t want to spend it.
That and we never seem to have spare time for anything. When we get time off I just want to be left alone for a few days. This is going to hurt, but I don’t think I know how to vacation properly.

This is no way to live. Every moment you work is trading your life for money. The only purpose for money is to live on (or help others). Many people who do what you do will never experience or enjoy all that they could, they’ll die and leave a huge pile of money to their “kids” who will be 40+ (likely 50-70) when they pass and don’t need the help. When they could have helped them during the earlier years when they needed it.
Die with Nothing…great book.
This doesn’t mean not saving for the future.

I’m retired, but I still feel this way.
The travel slog wears me out.
I enjoy places while I’m there, but I don’t plan the next trip on the way back like some people seem to do.

My tenants travel all the time. Way more than us, by a factor of probably 5. They also habitually cannot afford to pay rent at the end of the month.

How do you know they aren’t going back and forth taking care of an elderly parent or something?

US currently has the most credit card debt in history and growing…

Maybe those people make more money than you

I doubt it.
I’ve done very well financially.

Spill the beans then. Which card do you use that is so good?
On my Chase credit cards the flight options always cost more than literally the exact same flight booked direct. And I have the ability to select from more airlines and flight times. Of course there are more hotel options too.

I'm here in italy now for two weeks
We’ve kicked around the idea to buy some land and a place in Sicily. I need to get my kids paperwork in order to get their duel citizenship.

Lots of people love to travel and budget for that. I'm one of those people and most don't travel constant majority travel three or four times a year tops.

That is hard with my limited exposure.
To be honest majority of people should not mess with purchasing homes in other countries. Renting is the way the average traveler should be doing it.

the travel board is depressing. Almost every person traveling is asking about a 2-3 week trip all over Asia and Europe. Those are 20-30k trips and people reply they go every year.
Wrong you can travel all over Asia and not spend more than 5k

We run everything through one card. Replaced my roof this year. Put the check in my HYSA, paid for the roof on my card then paid off the card with the check. I had to pay for it, so why not get the points? That one transaction paid for my airfare, dinners and part of my hotel for my trip this summer.

I don’t play the cc game to the extent others do and I prefer to book directly. But sometimes it is cheaper and sometimes it’s better to book through your credit card. Just have to look for the deals and compare hotels.

There are lots of good answers on here and plenty of people that budget for it.
Odds are though that your average family taking Braxton on a trip and posting all over IG are just doing it on credit card debt.
"The average credit card balance for individual borrowers in the U.S. is $6,371 as of the first quarter of 2025, according to TransUnion. Other sources cite similar figures, such as the Federal Reserve's Q1 2025 finding of a $6,120 average."

Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire.
Do not use the Chase or Amex travel portal to purchase flights. Sign up for free airline rewards programs and then transfer your Chase or Amex points to the airline and book directly through the airline.
Obviously you can't transfer to every airline but there are enough partners that you can get yourself where you want to go , when you want to go.
Search the airline sites for who has the best mileage redemption for where you want to go, As noted above by shonuff Iberia has a fantastic redemption for off-peak business class flights to Spain. Dublin? You want to book on Aer Lingus from Boston or Philly. It takes a little work but I haven't had to sit in an economy seat of any type of a flight to Europe in a long time.
