Does anyone have experience with this? Seems my dad was wined and dined in Vegas and decided to buy in to this. I admit I’m ignorant but am very skeptical. Any information or experience is appreciated.

I posted this on the travel board but maybe money people would know about it. My dad is usually pretty smart with money and investments but this just doesn’t seem like one. (Again super ignorant and don’t really know) for paying 6 figures for something is he getting equity in this? If someone can explain in the simplest terms would be great. Thank you

It’s timeshares. Terrible idea, always.

Did you check what they are selling for on the secondary market? They maybe could have paid pennies on the dollar for the same timeshare by buying it from someone else.

Maybe he researched it in advance and knew how much to pay for it from the timeshare sales reps. Maybe he knows he worked x years to pay (how many years/days salary is this) for this one purchase and that's exactly what he intended to do before walking into that dinner.

I spend a lot of time researching big items like vehicles before purchasing, so spontaneously purchasing a timeshare for six figures doesn't compute with me.

He didn’t research it in advance.

We did this last month. My husband is pretty knowledgeable about time shares because his parents bought not one, but two of them in the 2 years before my father in law died.

So of course we said no to HGVC salesman but enjoyed 3 nights in a huge suite at Trump hotel in Vegas. Hilton owns some of the rooms in that hotel.

Anyway, Hilton's vacation club is the best out of the 3 timeshares that we are familiar with but still not really worth purchasing.

I'm not sure what your dad bought because we were not presented with anything that cost 6 figures. Yikes!!!

My husband was able to get his mom out of the second timeshare for $4000. They had only put a down payment and made a few payments on the mortgage. So a waste of 6 or 7 thousand dollars. The first time share's mortgage is paid in full so my husband and I use it.

My father in law was a retired savvy accountant until the last 3 years of his life when dementia set in. It really makes me sad that timeshare salespeople take advantage of sick people. My mother in law just signed everything because her husband told her to. She doesn't have a clue about most financial matters.

Look it up on eBay. If it was a good deal, there wouldn’t be so many listings for so cheap. They also get you with maintenance fees of a grand or so a year, which increase over time.

Yes all good. He was upset with me at first but then when he actually did some research he ended up thanking me for being real with him.

Good for him. I bought one on the secondary market. Originally sold for $34000. I paid $895. The annual fee has gone from $550 to $875 over the last 10 years. We get 7 nights a year. It is a Wyndam property in Co. We go every other year and swap it for somewhere the other year. Not terrible, but I would not buy another.

I’m curious, how many points did they give him? Did they offer lifetime diamond?

What is the secondary market per say? Is there a reputable site to buy and sell these?

I’m glad he got out. That’s only 2 nights in a good hotel if you’re lucky.
