How long a term can I get?
Is there a specific category or does it just fall under home improvement?
Thinking it will cost between 35-50k...

Not going to discuss if this is a good idea.
Friend of ours is spending 50K. Borrowed 40K from a credit union, 10 years, 7.5% interest. It was NOT a home equity loan.

Moved into a house with a pool 5 years ago, and my kids (now aged 9,5, 3) LOVE it. It is worth the maintenance. In 5 years we have gotten amazing use out if the pool. I also love my kids more than anything. That said, I don’t love them $50,000 worth to ever consider buying them a pool, if the house didn’t already have one. frick that shite.

My wife is beating the "I want a pool" drum, but I refuse to cave and buy one. It will end up just being another thing I will have to pay out of the arse to maintain. Like you said, if I do decide to buy one, I truly believe that I will be regretting it for the rest of my life. Especially once all my kids are out of the house in 8 years from now.

In talking to my friends who have put in pools recently, I've heard 60,000 is a base pool without all the bells and whistles.

Same. We were at a friend's house yesterday who has a very nice in-ground pool (that was there when they bought the house) and she started up again.
It's one of those things where if I'm going to go do, I'm going to go nice high quality, and I'm not willing to spend that amount of money.
We pay $400/yr for a membership to a swim and tennis club. The chemicals for a pool per year would be more expensive than that.

i jus bought a home with a pool. Pool is over 30 years old.
My kids love it.
I have already started the dialogue with a person to revamp the pool decking and coping as well as replace all the equipment.
Crossing my fingers the old equipment doesnt break before winter when we start the project.

There is no room in my backyard for a pool so this decision is easy for me.

if you dig your own hole in yard, i've heard you can talk them down to 57k.

I picked my present neighborhood & lot location based on proximity to the community pool. $60/mo is a deal, compared to insurance/maintenance, etc on a backyard pool. It's also easily 3x the size of what would fit in my backyard.

This is mine. $49K. Bubblers, fountains, beach entry, and it's heated.
Pool contractors and their pricing will vary greatly. This same pool would have cost $85K with another contractor. Same design and same apples to apples comparison. I used a landscape architect to design it, so I made sure everyone was competing on the same playing field.
