So I am thinking of trying to jump to the drilling side on land, MWD/DD, but worried about another slow down. I am spinning my wheels at my current position and have a little buyer's remorse over it.

The surge in domestic production, PL restrictions in TX and the scheduled production increase from OPEC has me a little leery.

The only thing that will stop land drilling is lack of pipeline infrastructure.

Onshore is better than offshore. The current strip bottoms in the $50s which is still economic in the basins that count. I’d just avoid companies that are too heavy in gas.

Only 2 since graduation, I've just brought this subject up before. I left big blue a couple yrs back due to severe pay cuts and jumped to a 14&14 contract job that I was hoping would lead to getting hired on or at worst give me a good schedule until things picked up. It's been tougher to jump back to the D&C side than I anticipated especially since DW is still slow and that's what all my experience is in.

I've been trying to get on with sperry and cant get them to bite. I had an offer from them coming out that they pulled because of the downturn so ended up with SLB. I think is boils down to that service prices are still depressed and they can pay someone with no experience less and we would still have to do the same training.

I am just currently wasting time right now and need to get with a company and be doing something I can have a career in.

What are you doing now?

The bad thing about the hot land jobs is that if there is another slump, it’ll likely be last in, first out. I know people that were hired and let go on the day of their orientation.

I’ve never done anything on US land, but it sure scares the shite out of me how fast things change.

It's a long and complicated story but what started as a facilities and decommissioning job has morphed into a dead end production job. Learned my lesson about jumping without thorough research.

Did SSTT and completions for SLB.

I would avoid MWD/DD. The schedule is terrible, non existent really and the pay isn’t nearly what it was or should be. From my current experience, most companies are using contractors and reluctant to hire bc it’s so non- commital for them should there be another down turn. That said, they are really desperate for hands, rigs seem to be coming up everyday, so there’s security for a good several years. Sounds like you know the business so you know what you’re getting into but there’s nothing more dead-end than MWD/DD unless you’re a good ole boy and those days are waning.

Ideally it leads to a company man job but even if staying on the service side one can do well planning and ops management etc. The big service companies, HB, SLB, BHI, have structured programs that usually allow for a move out of field positions around the 5 yr mark or so. I know the schedule is shite but I am only trying to be in the field another 5yrs or so unless I can land a company man job.

I know the pay is still depressed but if companies want competent hands it will have to come up. I would think.

Which is happening as we speak. I work in the Permian, and there are whispers of a slow down till mid next year waiting for pipelines to open up

I've actually heard land had some uncertainty due to pipeline capacity. I'm in DW only on the service side and it's currently looking like the end of this year and 2019 will be my busiest in since ~2013. I've got about 8 wells with just my customer base, and I'm one of about 13 in the GoM for my product line. That's relatively busy for DW. Could change on a dime though. Don't have the money in hand just yet.

When some of these guys have to report to wall street that they are selling oil in Midland at WTI less $15 or more there is going to be some push from investors to slow it down. This doesn't even touch on the chance gas at WAHA goes negative at some point.

There are numerous lines planned but it takes a while to get rolling. From the permian to Agua Dulce, Corpus and Mont Belvieu.

I worked as an MWD for BHI for 3 years. I quit voluntarily because being off shore 240 days a year sucked. Hate to break the news to you but you are not going to become a company after 5 years, its not how the industry works.

BHI cut pay by 15% during the downturn and has not increased it since. They are a good company to work for but I will not be going back.

Oh I know, they just won't be built fast enough. Damn near every pipeline and storage tank out here is 100% capacity.
