Maxed out my annual 5x points on my Ink+ this week thanks to OD card deal

What's the deal, do you have to go in-store to see it, and is it still active?

Yeah, unfortunately in store to buy the VCG but buy $300 or more in VCG get the fees back (plus $3) in instant rebate with 5x points on the Ink+ card. That card has been the best thing I learned on TD How to exploit it has been the 2nd Best thing

Just got back in town so I'm going to try to go to OD and see if it's still available. I am looking at getting the Ink Cash with the 50k bonus, hoping I get it since I already have the Ink+ and Ink Preferred

ETA: BTW how do you guys know when they have these specials for the GC's? I need to get on this train so the card is worth even more to me.

The blogs will alert on it like a tornado siren

The deals should also be in the weekly ads you can find on the OD or Staples website or wherever.

I heard there’s a nice sweet spot on top tier SPG/Marriott hotels up until the end of this year with the new announcements.

Yes, you can get high quality Marriott hotels for a good points value by converting SPG and getting 3:1.

In August though there is going to be a new combined chart so I wonder how bad that's going to be for SPG hotels. I'm going to book an SPG hotel with my points soon and then keep it or cancel it in Aug depending on the chart. Also, the SPG cards are getting devalued as they won't earn 1 SPG point per dollar anymore. It's going to earn 2 Marriott points basically and you were getting 3:1 so it's a 33% reduction. Biz AMEX loses lounge access.

The only good things I've seen so far is the card now gets a free night (only up to 35,000 points which isn't much) and there's more airlines to use the 20,000 gets you 25,000 miles bonus.

I think most importantly they haven't announced anything terrible in the new program which should be received as good news

I think the more competition in the rewards program area the better so obviously from that standpoint, this hurts.

Only the ones that allow for statement credits.

Barclay Arrival/Venture are really just cash back cards that let you use the points against travel purchases you make with the card. So if CheapOair codes as "travel" on those cards, you can use their "points" to negate some of the cost.

Otherwise, the answer is no, though, many of the bank currency programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards have their own booking engines where you can use the points in a similar fashion. But you can't use them as a "free agent" on any website so to speak.

SPG is supposedly only giving out $200 statement credits now as the bonus.

I figure this is the best place to post this question.

Which credit card should I look at for best rewards benefits?

I currently have an American Express Blue and a Wells Fargo Visa. The Wells Fargo card is terrible. Amex is decent it seems.

I want to replace the Wells Fargo with something. We do not fly much, so sky miles is not a must unless those points/miles stay around and dont expire.

Plan is to keep the Wells Fargo card open, but just not use it.

TIA

possibly chase sapphire reserve since the $300 credit goes towards any type of travel. plus, you can use chase points to book hotels.

you could consider a hotel branded card if you are loyal to a certain brand (the hyatt sign up bonus is nice, plus free night every year).

almost all of the best credit card perks/benefits are geared towards air travel (lounge membership, miles, etc.)

What kind of benefits? I know you said you don't fly much, but any more insight you can offer into what you're looking to get out of a card would be helpful.

Cash back?

Hotel points? And if so, any particular chain?

Just general flexible rewards points like chase ultimate rewards or amex membership rewards?

Is there a big purchase/travel trip/goal you have in the future you'd like the credit card to work towards for you?

Do you have an approximation on how much you spend on credit cards each month, and what those purchases are? Gas, groceries, bills, restaurants, office supplies, etc.

While most frequent flyer programs do have expiration rules on their miles, its usually possible to keep your miles from expiring without having to actually fly. Generally as long as you have activity(adding or using miles) in your mileage account within the stated time period that will prevent your miles from expiring. Activity could mean adding miles by getting credit card bonuses, buying something through an airline's shopping portal, transferring points from another program into that frequent flyer program, etc. Using could be using miles to purchase something that isnt a flight, or transferring miles into another points program.

All of that to say, if you don't necessarily have a particular goal in mind right now, you should still be open to an airline card. If there's a big trip you would like to take somewhere at some point in the future, the miles you get from signup bonuses can pay for most of, if not all of your flights for the trip, and often in business or first class.

Good points from both of you.

No real reason. I considered a hotel card. We do travel just not fly as of late.

Looking at general rewards. Would probably split payments up with Amex so putting about $1k on it a month maybe?

If the skymiles didn't expire, then that's a thought. I may honestly get more out of a hotel card if the points per night aren't outrageous.

My Amex is basically a general rewards so was thinking something different.

I honestly think you should grab a few no annual fee cash back cards and use them for whatever category they have a bonus in.

And if you can't handle multiple cards and use them on bonused spend, make it even simpler with something like Double Cash and call it a day.
