Companion pass has nothing to do with Credit cards. It is southwest's "top tier status." Any year you earn 110K points, they give you a BOGO pass. The credit cards help you get to 104K in one fell swoop, and these points count towards the 110K needed for the CP.

Companion pass allows a guest to accompany you an unlimited number of times for taxes + fees. It is legit

I have a companion pass (thanks to spg/mariotte) but have not bothered to call in and clarify but was wondering....Is it that you can designate a companion 3x per calendar year or that once you designate someone, you can actually still change your companion 3x afterwards per calendar year? I have read some conflicting reports.

I think it is the second one if I read your stuff right.

Think of it in terms of the card you get as a companion pass member (and technically need to carry as companion), you can change whose name is on that pass like 3 times

Let me know if you find a Cat 5 Marriott worth staying at for a day, leave alone a week.

I'd say blow the Marriott points on a stay or two at the Ritz.

I'm about to pull the trigger on the BofA Merrill Lynch card and another Citi Hilton Reserve. Does anyone have a recommendation for another BofA card as I want to apply for a few and take advantage of them combining all to a single hard pull.

Alaska (30K AS + $100) and/or Virgin Atlantic 75K offer (you end up with 90Kish points which can be converted to either IHG 1:1 or Hilton 1:1.5). But this one needs 15K spend in 6 months

Head to Asia for a couple weeks and split your time between Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit and Courtyard Bali Nusa Dua Resort.

Stay has got to be a week in 1 location.

1 week in Bangkok? 1 whole week in the most crap part of Bali? Pass.

I suggest upgrading it at the time of redemption to get something in Hawaii or Ski area

I have had the same credit card for 15 years but I get married in May so I have jumped in the game. I got the CSP and CSR in the last year which will pay for honeymoon flights to Hawaii. Fiancee and I both got Ritz Carlton cards (thanks to AmeriKop) to get 6 free nights at the Ritz in Maui.

I planned to take a break but I recently received a targeted offer for the Amex Business card. I get 150,000 points with $20K spending in 3 months. Normally that would be a lot of MS but I have a wedding reception to pay for at or above $20K. The reception hall plans to charge me 3.5% ($700+) to use credit card so I had originally planned to pay with cash. But this is too good to pass up right?

Also, I believe I get 1.5 points for purchases of over $5K, I would really get 180,000 (150K + 30K) [points). That is a minimum of $1800 and I understand their "pay with points" is kind of like Chase's UR portal? The Centurion and Delta lounges would be a nice benefit too as the Priority Pass is so limited.

Golden opportunity. Do it. Call ahead and tell them that you are planning to put a $20k purchase on it. They may (or may not) require you to write them a check to cover it first. Just remember its a charge card so you can't carry a balance. So you are all set.

Only thing is, I would apply for 2 more chase cards before applying for this one. Maybe the SW Companion pass may make sense for you and your SO? SW Premier (50K) and SW Plus (50K) will get you there in a hurry.

That will bring you to 5/24. Right after that, apply for the AmEx. All 3 doable in 1 day. Chase will combine inquiries into 1.

Glad to hear about the honeymoon. Seems a perfect use of points and your nights. When you get closer, see how much it is to upgrade to F. First $350 will be covered by the Ritz card

Is the Amex Business Platinum subject to 5/24? I thought business cards were excluded from 5/24?

I do have a credit limit problem. Chase keeps giving me like 30K limits on my cards and I was initially rejected on the Ritz until I called and had them move credit around. Do you think I need to reduce my limits before applying to Amex?

What do you mean "Chase will combine inquiries into 1"?

I plan on booking First class on American airlines through the Chase Portal. I am actually AA Gold and have some 500 mile upgrades but don't want to risk not getting first class.

Are you referring to the $300 (not $350) travel credit? I am trying to figure out how to best use it if not on the flights to Hawaii. Is there a way to apply that travel credit on Chase's portal?

Ahh, I think you are correct about that. Pretty sure actually.

No, with Chase just call them when you get rejected and offer to move credit around.

Shouldn't affect what you get from other banks.

When you apply for more than 1 credit card from the same bank on the same day, they only pull your credit once. So it shows up as 1 hard inquiry on your credit report.

No way to apply it on the portal. Best way to utilize it would be to buy $50 AA GCs from AA.com and call in and say they were baggage fees. So that covers $600 of the airfare for y'all.

Intending to open Chase accounts soon to nab account opening bonuses, thinking of finally aiming for CSR as I think I'm at 4/24 as well. Main concern since this first came out has been trying to hit 4k spend on my relatively modest normal budget. Any non-questionable tips for hitting spend aside from the usual "pay utilities in advance"?

Edit: by non-questionable, I'm basically referring to the likelihood of a points clawback or account closure

Yeah so I thought upgrades weren't allowed based on some blogs I'd read. However when I called today to put in the redemption, the agent said I could in fact upgrade it later, so I will plan to use it somewhere nice.

Definitely can. Whenever you want to book, just pay the difference. For now, lock in the CP with the cheapest package.
