so ideally, one would need to get Freedom, take advantage of the categories, then get Sapphire, transfer freedom to sapphire, then transfer sapphire to airlines? 5 airline points per dollar is amazing

Exactly. This is why we usually recommend this combo not only for those getting in to the credit card world, but the guy with 10 in his wallet also.

Do you pay through Opentable?

Someone bought me a gift card through OpenTable which is what made me think about it.

Once you redeem the giftcard, you select what restaurant to use it at, which basically creates a giftcard for that specific establishment.

If the first steps codes as a restaurant that would be great

I'm thinking of taking the wife to the caribbean in January...taking advantage of the Hyatt card two free nights. Any advice on a nice hyatt resort somewhere down there?

Lots of islands down there. I'd start on the Hyatt site. Please note that not every island is the same. There's good and there's not so good.

Awesome...so next question- what is a good Chase Freedom signup bonus to look for?

From what I can tell, Hyatt has Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Aruba.

Don't see any where else under what I'm defining as "caribbean"

Unfortunately the Baha Mar in the Bahamas is a total financial disaster

You also have the All inclusives:
quote:

Jamaica
Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall
Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall

Mexico
Hyatt Zilara Cancun
Hyatt Ziva Cancun
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta

That's where I'd go to spend my free nights if that was the plan. Even if you don't choose to spend much time at the resort, it's not like you paid extra to be "stuck" at the resort.

I think the Hyatt Aruba is being bought out by another chain, but I remember reading decent reviews about it.

$150
15k points is a good bonus. It has been up to 20k points, but it generally sits at 10k points.

Ya, I didn't see Jamaica and wasn't counting Mexico.

Have you seen the Baha Mar disaster? What a mess

I was wondering about the all inclusive ones. Thanks.

Yeah. Jeesh .
I was actually kind of happy about it when announced. I wish I would've booked a room. Apparently they compensated some of the guests pretty well for cancelling their trips. 9k(MSY-MIA-NAS) points for an Avios trip down there would have been pretty hard to beat and AA actually has award availability for those flights often.

Thanks for your help! I currently have Marriott and IHG cards but I feel they are limiting me. I like the idea of earning points and having the flexibility to use them on hotels AND flights. The 5 pts per dollar on freedom to transfer to Sapphire seems like icing on the cake. I'll probably put my IHG and Marriot cards in the safe and just carry the Freedom and Sapphire in my every day purchase going forward

Yep. Those 2 cards were my primary cards to swipe last year. I've now got so many damn cards with bonus categories that I don't use and cancelled the sapphire but have the ink plus so I can still take advantage of the freedom bonuses by transferring to the ink(same ability to transfer to partners like the sapphire).

The ink plus biz card is still my favorite card in the CC world, but it takes a more in depth understanding to fully utilize it. It's hard to beat for a joint family usage card even without fully exploiting some of its bonus categories IMO.

Teddy, you should be about to leave for your Asia extravanza, right?

Getting fired up?

I'm taking a shoot n snap to load up on pics for a trip report to post here for my January trip. I've got reservations at the #1 restaurant in Asia(Gaggan made 4 months ago), another top 10(Nahm) and one of the best sushi joints in Tokyo(Sushi Iwa who has a Michelin star). I had to make a reservation at park Hyatt Tokyo and get the concierge to book it because they wouldn't accept a reservation from a foreigner without it. Basically going on a food tour.

Flying Japan airlines first both ways will be pretty awesome too. Champagne they serve runs $800+ in restaurants and whisky that is usually $50+/glass.

Buckeye haven't heard from you on what your CC plans are for 2016?

I'm sure shonuff is trying to figure Out where he can earn points and still where his Tommy Bahama shirts n flip flops.

I'm going to use my hyatt diamond suite upgrades for a January 2017 trip to Kauai and Maui. Maybe get a beer with our flip flop friend in the pacific.

Yo!

Ya, next Wednesday is take off day. Just tightening up final plans.

Something y'all might find interesting. Snapchat (which I still barely know how to use) has this thing where they highlight a city in the world and when you select it, you can see the short snapchat videos people shared from that city stitched together in short overall video. I haven't figured out if you can choose any city in the world or just what they give you, but its really cool in its own way. Hope some app expounds on that idea.

Anyways, Bangkok so happened to be on there last night, and I happened to run into a video showing True Love Cafe where they have dogs you can pet and stuff.

Now its on the itinerary for my wife.

High class. We ate at Spice Route in Delhi. Maybe I should add a really nice dinner in Bangkok and just fight the potential jetlag to do it. Those experiences are really one of a kind, very jealous.

When I get back I'll definitely share some photos too. Maybe go back and dig up the prior trips. Bring the thread to another level.

Interesting...I may have to go back to Serve. I had bluebird and then changed to target. Now Target is dead so I'm just doing OV's to MO's. Any idea on RA's daily limits?

Are the suite upgrades only on paid stays?
