Much appreciated, I'll give that a try. For some reason I was under the impression that the Ink card had to be swiped in order to earn 5x.

Nope, just the transaction with properly coded merchant ie "Office Supply Store".

Just booked my first award tickets. I didn't do great because I'm impatient and will be traveling during peak season (mid July) but not terrible either for very little work.
For two people:
60,000 AA miles: DFW -> LHR (10 hours to fart around London) -> Paris.
85,000 Amex Points (transferred to Flying Blue): Paris -> DFW.
I avoided big fuel surcharges by making sure that flight from DFW was on an AA plane rather than British Air.

I'm trying to book a flight from Houston to Rome July 1st and Barcelona back to Houston July 12th. I have about 160k qantas points and 70k united. I plan to try to fly to Rome with Qantas points. For 2 people it'll cost me about 84k points for economy but only 156k for business. So thinking hard about splurging. For the return, it'll just be economy.
If your flexible, awards tickets always seem to open up as you get closer. Sucks a bit for united as they add a close in surcharge for tickets booked with 2 weeks. But something will be there.

Probably won't be that bad in the future since I probably won't be so specific with destination and days from here on out.

I really wrestled with this but in the end a couple of Ambien cost way less, and booking in the high season it was prohibitively expensive, but definitely would go this route in the fall when it's cheaper.
Here's what I learned:
- There's something to be said for the simplicity of AA's awards. If you can fly on their planes, rather than a partner with big surcharges, it's a breeze.
- Of the 17 Amex airline partners, I joined the FF program for about a dozen in order to see award ticket costs. Most sites were pretty terrible to use - looking at you, Iberia - but Air France's was very user-friendly, it shows the whole month and often has sales from certain US cities, Dallas among them. For "last minute" award flights this was by far the best option. By comparison, British Air doesn't show any award flights until September on this route, and many others were well into the fall.
- I'm ready to start collecting miles again; actually pulling the trigger on those tickets was an awesome feeling. And I got a baller hotel in the middle of Paris for $175/night on booking.com.

Same here, for next time. In high school our EF tour of Italy and France was cancelled because of 9/11 and I've never made it across the Atlantic. It's haunted me, and if I didn't do it now I'm not sure when the next chance would be. Better to waste miles than put it off until October, I say.

On another thought, do you guys think putting destinations / hotels you have traveled to (rewards or no rewards) and experiences in this thread or a new thread would be beneficial
I don't use rewards to pay for about 70-80% of my hotel stays. I find Priceline, VRBO/Air BnB, Agoda or Expedia deals to generally be a better value than burning points.

THe problem is not all of their partner's awards show up on their site, so you have to search separately.
I think United has one of the best search engines.

So how much importance is age of an account? My oldest card is my Cap One (no fee so it sits in a drawer). My second oldest card is my AA Citi which I use. I am thinking of canceling the AA Citi. The reason is I got that US Air card in Dec which just turned into a Red Aviator card in the mail and I got a higher limit with that card and no foreign transaction fees. It has every other advantage that the AA Citi has unless someone can correct me? My Citi has foreign trans fees.
So is it not a good idea to cancel my 2nd oldest card for one that will only be 1 years old by the time I do cancel? It has no advantage to the Red Aviator in any way that I can find. For me, it's just about the age.
What say you?
ETA: While we're at it, I need to get a business card, so which one should I go for? I may need to cancel another card as the fees start to add up.

Chase:
Ink plus(Earn 5X points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services, Earn 2X points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and hotel accommodations)
United(Earn 2 miles for each $1 spent at restaurants, gas stations, and office supply stores and 2 miles for each $1 spent on tickets purchased from United. Earn 1 mile per $1 spent on all other purchases.)
You might also consider churning the BoA Alaska 25k point business and personal card given your location.
The Citi AA Platinum biz 50k point offer is still around and is reportedly churn-able.

Just had my Global Entry "interview."
That was easy.
I'm now part of the superior race.

Is the Asia trip the next out of country trip?
No credit apps in 7 months here. FICO up from 754(I think) back to 792. Not sure what my next plan of attack will be. Not really excited about anything, but no reason to sit on a 792 too long....that's just wasteful.

Well Discover just dropped a bomb. Works for existing customers too. Earning 10% cash back on food, gas, holiday purchases is cray!

That's pretty damn hard to beat. I don't have a Discover, but they must send me about 90 snail mail offers a year. I'd get the card if they offered even a small signup bonus.

Is there any reason not to apply for multiple credit cards around the same time? Getting an invite to Chase Freedom (some money to the person who referred me and they're currently offering $200 if you spend $500 in the first 3 months).. But 10% is an incredible offer and I'd love to do both..

They did when I signed up in 2013. If you refer someone, you get $50

Ya, I originally had a tight connection at Newark coming back via China so I applied.
That got changed to a connection in Chicago where I get home sooner with an easier connection, but I'm still quite happy with the TSA Precheck I'll get for every thing else.
I just can't deal with lines again. Being behind people who don't know what they're doing is too much, domestic or international.
As for deals, I recently did British Airways and Alaska (why not?). Wife just got United. I think I'm good for awhile. I need to give Chase a break.
Not really sure what I'm looking for next besides Sapphire Preferred again. I'm pretty bad about just applying randomly too

Been eyeing that Panama City flight but the economy seats all got up and left a month or so ago for the period I want to potentially take it so I have to wait that out.
