I am helping someone who has lost a significant amount of money through his Coinbase account. This happened in the last 3 months so not sure if it's related to their 2021 data breach.
I have stayed away from crypto, so I am not familiar with a lot of the practices, any info or sources you have I'd appreciate.

Are you sure it’s not just the value of his crypto holdings shitting the bed?

What are you looking for? Did they transfer stuff out? Or did they buy at the top and their stuff has shite the bed.
Or were they hacked? The records are likely all their - buys/sells, transfers in/out.

No, it's USD he had in his account that was the result of an earlier transaction. After a certain date his email address on the account was changed and no other activity, but his balance was gone.
It's a long story, but I'm just tracing the paperwork back.

If they fished him and swapped his email address then reset the acct he’s likely SoL

CoinBase refuses to provide much information, they will not provide records of the transactions past the date his email changed. We only have records before that date.
CoinBase has no main office, all 3K employees work remotely, they are as vaporous as the currency they trade. I am also posting as a warning to anyone who trades on CoinBase, they had a major data breach last year.

Yeah then he may be screwed, filing suit for the records may be the only choice.
Also He should be able to get records if the acct was in his name as well. Paper mail requests might work.

His only chance to recover is to sue, subpoena the records and hold them accountable.

This is a bit off topic, but in cases where someone is hacked or there’s identity theft, some fraudulent transactions take place (that would generate profits), and the original owner gets 1099s reflecting profits… how do these crypto firms help deal with the IRS, if at all???

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Ah American greed

Always always always use multi-factor authentication, preferably with an authenticator app. Email accounts are easily compromised, and SMS 2FA can be bypassed with SIM swapping. Crypto is still the wild west, to an extent, and you don't have the same protections you have in the more civilized parts of the financial sector.

This is why folks should use hard wallets.

Since the stolen money was in USD a hard wallet would not have helped.

You are correct, but multifactor authentication, from what little information I can get from CoinBase, if far from foolproof. I'm pretty sure the hackers got a duplicate SIM card and ghosted his phone, so the last 2 factors, a SMS verification code and the IP address are useless. It is recommended that you should never trade from a mobile device, only a fixed PC.

This
And never go full retard and click those “Please confirm your info” emails that come from “Coinbase”. The email addresses those usually look like:

Yeah still have a coinbase account but pulled my money out long ago due to their lack of Customer service and the ridiculous fees.

This another massive reason why you don't use coinbase. Absolute shite company

I would go further and say never click on any email from coinbase. I get several a week and they are never legit

I have used them for years...no problems
