Either Citi is having phone trouble or they don't know wtf they're doing, but we're on our 6th call with them now trying to get this resolved. Figured I would try here in the meantime.

The Citi app alerted us about a possibly fraudulent charge for $1500 last week, and we called to confirm that it wasn't us and disputed. The charge was still pending. They sent new cards.

We went to pay the bill today, and the disputed charge has posted. We did manage to talk to someone who said they are still investigating the charge and that it could take 2 months to resolve. So why did it post?

Anyway, the CS rep couldn't answer our questions, so they sent us to the security dept which keeps getting disconnected. The questions:

Will they charge us interest if we don't pay it?

Will this eat into our limit until it is resolved?

Sorry if these are dumb questions. We are trying to pose these dumb questions to Citi's security dept, but an hour and a half and now 7 calls later, we still haven't been able to talk to anyone about it.

Finally spoke with someone, and got the shitty answers I was expecting. It does count against our limit, and we will be charged interest if we don't pay it. IF they determine that it was in fact fraudulent, then the charged interest is returned.

They asked probing questions like have we asked each other about the charge, were the cards in our possession, etc as if this rep was conducting the "investigation" over the phone and we're the suspects.

Pretty shitty.

I’d be moving my business. That’s the whole point of having a credit card and not a debit card.

I have chase and they seem to get alot of hate, no problems here. Anytime something like that happens they take care of it right away. Charge might show for a day or 2 but that's it. Even had them call me and ask if I had certain fraudulent charges before I seen them.

We probably will, especially if this drags out. Really don't understand why it posted. *They* alerted us to the suspicious charge. We said yes, good catch, it's not us. And now a thief and a bank are playing around with our finances anyway.

Logged in tonight and it back on card cleared. They finally said to be patient bc they are going to investigate bc of large amount.

I used to have a Citi card. Customer service was really bad compared to AMEX and Chase. I closed the Citi card account. Sounds like things haven't changed much.

Citi does not care and I would leave them.

There is a lot to be said about having cards from smaller financial institutions or credit unions.

As a former banker many times it has to post to then be deemed fraud. They need to ensure the merchant got the money then they can begin to unwind it. It’s a process but you shouldn’t get up in arms about it.

My AMEX and CAP1 Spark cards handle shite like this fast and without question. Move your business as soon as you can.

Citibank doesn't care about consumer accounts.

Have had this happen with Chase a few times over the years and it sounds like the opposite approach.

If it is suspected of fraud they remove it from the bill and only add it back if they deem it was not

They should not, but all cc companies have language that says they "can". Capital One & Chase move fast on this, so it's never been an issue for me

All CC companies do this. It sucks, but this is the right way to handle it to protect them. But, most move fast, so it's usually a non-issue.

I imagine this is standard procedure because shitty people will challenge random charges on their cards to avoid paying for items they bought.

As others said, get a new card now with a better company. Once this is resolved, walk from Citi

It's their problem. They'll care.

As far as interest, it won't come to that. Depending on when you are on the billing cycle, you have a while until interest kicks in on those monies

I shouldn't get up in arms about a $1500 charge that could hang around on my account for months?

And they asked my wife if I had made the charge, and when she answered that I said I didn't she then asked my wife if she believes me.

They said it's our decision whether we pay it. They're already treating us like liars instead of victims, no way we're going to pay it and give them a reason to claim we've in some way accepted the charge.

I get that, but we've had this card for years and we've run several hundred thousands of dollars through it, and it's been paid off in full every single month. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a giant corporation, but it would be nice if our history with them was worth something.

I would have canceled right there.

This is the problem once again with large banks. There is too much riff-raff.

Do they also give you back additional interest for the free loan you gave them?

First of all, thanks for the times you've helped me on The Tech Board.

I've had a few fraudulent charges on my cards over the years, sometimes posted, some not. It was always cleared up, whether in a day or a few weeks.

I can't imagine they would actually charge you interest after it's proven fraudulent.

As far as your limit, just call them and ask them to increase it. Certainly shouldn't be a big deal to increase it by $1000. I wouldn't mention why either.

Meanwhile, since you're pissed, go get another card and move on.

I'm also a merchant and have dealt on the other end of things too. It always works out, sometimes fast, sometimes not. I've made a few mistakes over the years and if it involves a cc, I always offer to write the customer a check after I tell them it may take a week or so for the bank to clear the error.

Best of luck, but if I were you, I wouldn't sweat it.

Citi called my wife this morning to grill her with the same questions.

Have you ever loaned your card? No.
Have you asked your husband about his purchases? Yes.
What did he say? He says he didn't make the purchase.
So you don't think he did it? No! I've already answered these questions.
We just need to make sure nothing has changed.

Then they told her they would have to investigate the ip address, location, etc of the purchase. It's been 8 days, shouldn't you have done that already?!

Starting to sweat it.
