I looked at a used Jeep today at a local dealership. When the sales manager presented me with the offer sheet, there was a line item listed as “accessories” and it was $495. I asked the manager what that was for and he said it was some type of anti theft stuff, free oil changes and two new tires when I needed them. I told the guy I didn’t want that, and he said it was non negotiable. That’s clearly BS right? This dealership was about a hour from where I live so that would’ve done me zero good. We didn’t make the deal regardless of the bogus fee, but for some reason it just rubbed be the wrong way. Am I wrong to think this?

Everything is negotiable in a dealership. If you would have agreed to buy it but without those fluff add ons they would have folded.

I straight up told the dude I wasn’t paying for that and he immediately said “that’s nonnegotiable”.

Yes. You don't have to pay the processing fees either if you don't want to.

Give them a price you will pay, add TTL and say that's it.

Yeah it really rubbed the the wrong way. That and the fact he was only willing to knock $250 off the sales price for a Jeep that’s been on their lot for several months

Interesting that this was listed on a used vehicle. You definitely did the right thing telling them to pound sand.

I pretty much use truecar to determine what I'll pay and then when I find that vehicle, I tell them what I'll pay and they can take it or leave it. It is slightly easier with a new car, because any number of dealerships have the same car.

I had one guy try to play that four corners bullshite on me and when I did the calculation, it was a good $14k over sticker. I asked him about it and he started lecturing me about interest. He calculated it at like 9 or 10% interest. We had words and I left.

They show recent sale prices for the car you're looking for in your area, that should at least put you in the "I'm not getting taken advantage of" ballpark

I’ll shoot for the lower to middle end of the “Great Price”.

Most people on here already said that this was a ripoff, and I'll add to that. Whenever there is an added sticker on the Monroney that lists aftermarket dealer accessories like VIN etching, nitrogen-filled tires, etc. take that as a big red sign saying "ripoff."

Most of these additions are sold at a ridiculous markup. A lot of them aren't really useful at all, but if you decide you simply HAVE to have them, it's almost always cheaper to just get it done somewhere else or do it yourself. For example, vin etching is like a $20 kit on amazon (you still probably dont need that). Fabric protection is just a bottle of Scotchgard.

You did the right thing by not accepting this bogus fee.

Since True Car is now partnered with so many dealerships, I'm not sure I trust their information any more. First of all, they show an extraordinarily low volume of sales for very popular vehicles.

Second, they no longer show the Dealer Cost and Invoice pricing like they used to. This makes me think the dealers refused to list on the site with this information available.

Lastly, the website is directed more at getting a "True Car" negotiated price that you can bring to the dealer for a "no haggle" experience. I'm sure any dealer would be ecstatic with these prices since they are probably much higher than what you could get if you negotiated.

Wasn't going to comment, but this is true. Bought our last car and checked true car and if I had used it's advice on a great price, would have paid $3K more, and this was on a 30K car.

To me its just a website to get info and nothing more.

Go to another dealer and give them the sale. Or wait for the one you just visited to call you back within a few days. The finance guy just lost the sale for the salesman.

when i bought my wife's pilot a couple of years ago, they tried to get me to pay $500 for a clear coat and glass etching they did in case of theft. I told them i didn't want that and they hit me with the "thats non-negotiable." it made me so mad. They ended up giving me $500 more for trade-in but i was still so mad.

I guess my point is that the information is no longer reliable.

Last August every Santa Fe on the lot at Mike Morgan in Shreveport came with dealer installed tinting and pinstripes to the tune of $1500 ($2000??) for the tint and several hundred for the pinstripes. Their story on the tint was that it's hot down here and every buyer wanted tinting (so nothing to do with dealer profit, of course). They made no offer to get one in and not apply the dealer installed "options." Really nice vehicle, test drive went well, but we were buying something that week and eliminated Hyundai based on their BS.

just wait until they do the paperwork then tell them you arent paying it. they will take it off. They would probably rather leave it on the finance guy probably gets commission on all that shite.
