I’ll be leaving the country for 2 months. No need to pay for insurance if I’m not using it.

How does the dmv have authority to punish you? Are you indentured in some way?

On the flip side, insurance companies may have issue if they see you went uninsured as I’m sure it’s a factor in their risk assesment.

Maybe States vary I guess but your dmv question seems draconionan

I’m not sure dmv or city, but there’s is a law that says if you are uninsured over certain number of days, you will be penalized a certain amount + fees.

no, if you do you have to turn in your license plate and cancel the registration. then when you get back you have to go get them redone at a cost of around $100+ so you dont save anything doing it and then go spend a full day waiting around at the DMV to get a new plate and registration.

what you can do is go set it up for insurance to put a pause on your coverage for those months. the cost is minimal for those months since they wont pay any claims during that time its said to be "out of use". as far as state and insurance goes you are still fully insured by law but you arent using the vehicle on the road.

go talk to your insurance guy about it

If you don’t carry insurance for 60 days your rate will be a lot more when you get back. If you cancel and it gets stolen or catches fire or a tree falls on it you are SOL

Why not just drop the insurance down to the minimum while you are gone?

Talk with your insurance agent, you aren't the first person to have this come up.

If in Louisiana, you will be fined for canceling a policy and not turning in plates.

I'd either see if you can pause your policy while you are gone or drop to minimum coverage.

What Oklahogjr said. I remember one of my coworkers having an extra car he didn’t plan on driving for a few months. He called his insurance company and got some special type of really cheap policy.

Think you have to turn your plate in. You may be able to contact your insurance company and tell them what's going on, similar to when military get deployed.

i never said cancel the insurance, the insurance company allows you to suspend coverage on a vehicle that is taken off the road and out of service for a while.

it still is insured under a policy, but the suspending of it "by the insurance company" means you cant drive it and they wont cover anything that happens if you do. there is a limit on the maximum length of time they will do this, its 6 months maximum i think.

call your insurance agent and he will set it all up and tell you what is the best way
