Apple is United Airlines' biggest customer at the San Francisco International Airport, according to signs the airline has available that were shared on Twitter today.

According to United, Apple spends $150 million on airline tickets each year, and purchases 50 business class seats on flights to Shanghai every day.

Apple has many suppliers in China, which explains why the company sends so many employees to the Shanghai Pudong Airport.

Apple spends $35 million each year on flights from SFO to Shanghai, which is the number one flight the company purchases. Other routes are also popular, with Apple employees flying between these top 10 locations frequently:

1. Shanghai (PVG)
2. Hong Kong (HKG)
3. Taipei (TPE)
4. London (LHR)
5. South Korea (ICN)
6. Singapore (SIN)
7. Munich (MUC)
8. Tokyo (HND)
9. Beijing (PEK)
10. Israel (TLV)

I think Chevron used to charter a United plane for direct flights from Houston to Angola. They called it the Houston Depressed

To put that amount into perspective, the $35 million equates to 0.0132% of its annual 2018 sales revenue.

That would be the same as someone who makes $100,000 a year spending $13.16.

True, but is necessarily to shuffle 50 people back and forth from Shanghai every day. Seems a bit excesssive.

I'm pretty sure it's not the same 50 people every day...

I figured that, but it still seems excessive. Maybe I’m just too simple of mind to grasp it.

Unlikely they are going there to actually turn screws on a manufacturing line, hard to imagine what they are doing that they couldn't do on a iPhone.

What kind of discount do they get on 50 seats? I mean that’s like $5,000 each right? If not closer to 10? Why not charter a damn jet for that and then you can leave when you want.

I was thinking the same.

But how many flights does the airline do per day?

If it is more than one, a chartered plane would be cost prohibitive because now you have several planes to charter. If it is just one, then a plane may work depending on flight times and transit times.

Funny how these big tech companies still act like it's 1975. Face time them, dumbasses.

It takes a lot of hand holding to keep 8 year olds working 7 days a week.

I'm joking. Sort of.

Shanghai may not be their final destinations. Likely some are going onward to other regional airports/locations.

It’ll cost around 6600 a person to fly on a charter SFO to Shanghai. More if you need the plane to wait for a return trip. This assumes a G5 with a load of 14 (seems common/average) config. The cost can easily double on a particular trip you only need to send a handful of people.

The difference in cost outflows is probably not worth the additional logistical considerations and liability exposures.

Very interesting, thanks. But that's a G5, they could damn near charter a 737 daily!

They are saying 50 seats a day, so those peeps are clearly coming back.

Plus, chartered jets don't have to go through Airport security. So you could have the jet leave at a better time for employees AND no security, etc. Hell they could fly it out of somewhere other than SFO too that would be even better for their employees.

I'd assume Apple has considered all this though.

They should just figure out a way to keep 50 people from needing to fly to Shanghai every day, seems like a no-brainer for a tech company.
