Me and my girlfriend have been thinking of ideas for a side hustle. She has been pushing for weeks that we should buy a slide/bounce house and start renting them out on weekends. She thinks it would be easy money but I'm not as sure. I've never had experience with these things so I figured I'd ask the board to see if anyone has and if it's worth investing in?

The big ones are heavy as hell!! It was much heavier than I ever expected when I agreed to help a buddy pick one up and set it up!! Good luck!!

I think the biggest negative would be spending your weekend setting up and taking it down.

You will need a trailer to transport them, and it's hard work (but doesn't take long) to set up and take down.

You need a place to keep them dry when not being used, and you need a place to set them up at home to clean them, dry them out between uses (no one wants to rent a dirty stinky slide or house).

Having basic repair knowledge is good. They do pop holes, the blower fans break, etc.

But a good commercial grade one will last for years. You can get a really nice new one for $2,000 and if you rent it out at $150/weekend (what they tend to go for around here) it won't take you long to recoup your investment. Your operating costs are low.

Hire an attorney to make sure you have a good waiver!

Just one? Seems like you really need at least 4 to make it worth the hassle and giving up a lot of freedom on the weekends.

Just adding to what others mentioned…

You’ll probably want to setup an LLC and get commercial liability insurance. Plus workers comp insurance if you’re hiring any outside help besides you and your girlfriend, who I presume will be co-owner in the venture. Possibly commercial auto insurance too, especially if you ever plan for an employee to be driving to/from deliveries.

You’ll need 2 people for setups and take downs because those things are heavy…so need to factor in cost for a helper unless your girlfriend is planning to be your extra muscle.

Also need to factor in cost of buying a trailer if you don’t already have one.

Yeah her idea was to start with one and eventually buy more as we go along. There are about 2 or 3 other people who have them in our area but they rent out quick around here.

Thanks for all for the info guys! I was skeptical about the idea when she first mentioned it and I still kind of am. I also figured there would be more to it than she was thinking.

My cousin had a couple when I was young. They are really heavy and after getting it loading on the trailer we went back to his house and clean it. I’m not sure how much he maid ( doesn’t do it anymore) but I can tell you it’s a pain in the arse cleaning and loading them

The bounce houses seem like they would be disgusting, dirty and covered in gross kid stuff.

Also, make sure to spike it down.

I get keeping initial costs down but I wonder if only having one will limit your customer base who may be looking for a variety to choose from.

Some kids want the princess one and some kids want the sports one.

That was another issue I proposed. After all of the info I've gotten, I'm leaning towards just finding new ideas.

Going into business with your girlfriend sounds like a bad idea.

Acquittance has one. He's never free on the weekends, always looking for help to bring a slide to BFE for $100, and the market is extremely saturated and cutthroat AF. Talking about messaging people on Facebook on his business page offering better pricing etc.

I'd be curious to know what level of liability insurance those people have to carry.

Exactly. That would be my concern as well.

Nice win last night, dammit.

They also have to be inspected annually (or every few years, not sure on this) by the fire department marshal.
