This is an imperfect analogy, but it works for me. The market "breathes" providing natural fluctuation up and down. Also, the market goes up over time. Trading on that natural fluctuation is not a wise move in my opinion, because it can't be predicted (i.e., you can't time the market). However, you can be fairly certain that the market will go up over time. So, buy and hold or pick a time horizon that's long enough to get you out of the unknowable 'breathing' zone.
