I am a sales engineer at an ISP, I support sales people in a technical role. I come from our infrastructure support and engineering group, so my career focus for a long time was to be as technical as possible. I started this job and quickly realized my technical skills were about 10% of the job, and the rest was shuffling papers, herding cats (salespeople) and making nice with customers and their IT staff. I HATED it at first and almost went back to my previous role, despite it being a 30% pay raise right off the bat (more like 45% after some additional raises since I landed the job). I questioned why it paid so well when the technical skill requirement was so low, because in my brain technical skill = $$$. But nope, generating revenue and preventing revenue loss through salespeople frickups is apparently worth a lot more money than being highly technical. Still irks me sometimes because I put so much work in

Guess I could try to drop my job and go play video games for a living, but I'm nowhere good enough at them for that

One of my biggest learnings with my career pivot is that the number of people you're responsible for or reliant on is directly related to frustration/stress.
I pretty much work independently, so my success or failure is on me. And it's great.

If it helps, there are plenty of people who have found happiness and fulfillment without making lots of money. Of course it's important to meet your basic financial goals (house, education for children, safety, retirement planning, necessities), but it's wrong to think that wealth accumulation is a primary goal for contentment.
I say that as a teacher*.
And while it's been hard in some ways to see my close friends eclipse the $100k/year mark before 35, I wouldn't trade places with them. I enjoy my work. I have the time to pursue creative endeavors. I have a lot of quality time with my family.
*Wife is also a teacher, so we make about $120k combined in Alabama. Benefits are covered and we're in a defined pension plan.

Yes indeed. Giving money to those in need is what I call “planting seeds.”
As long as your heart is in the right place and you are generous with what the good Lord blesses you with, you will never ever have to worry about “making ends meet.”

To me the only benefit of being in a crummy job you hate is the money it pays allows you to enjoy other aspects of life or retire early. If you give the money away then you are in a job that makes you miserable with no extra money. That’s what makes people happy?

I am far from hating my job but it definitely has big swings where it’s really rewarding and other times it is a total beat down. With that said, I’m fairly compensated and have had strong career progression. It should enable earlier retirement and that’s worth a lot to me.

What if we hate our job and get paid crap? Is this thread for us to?
I've been wanting to switch careers for a while because of the hours taking me away from family and am just in general very unhappy with the job. The only reason I've stuck around this long is because I work for a family member and he would be in a bind if I left right now but I'm not so slowly reaching the point where I won't have a choice.
