Amex Gold Card completely changing

No more 2x at gas stations and now $250 annual fee instead of $90
Added bonuses are 4x at supermarkets and restaurants and super markets. This is going to be a no for me. I'll be looking for a new card once I'm set to renew in April.

Sounds like they are taking a shot at the CSR. With that said, their choice of restaurants for the annual dining credit is interesting to say the least...

They’re calling it the gold card now, but it’s the PRG.

I ordered the old PRG with 50k welcome points and waived 1st year fee last week. They updated the earning tables but still no annual fee. Couldn't have timed it better.

I got the email on this and glanced over it. I might be mistaken but the way I understood it was the $250 is just a upgrade option.

Nope, this is it

Just ordered my metal card today...wife wanted the rose gold...turns out, you have to have the same card if you’re on the same line....so looks like I’ll have rose gold too. Yay.
But at $250 I’ll probably drop it when it’s annual fee time in August.

Reads a lot like the Capital One Savor with a much higher annual fee and reward points instead of cash.

Not sure if I’ll end up keeping it with the extra few but I sure spend a hell of a lot more at supermarkets and restaurants so I would expect I will get much more in pints than usual with the new structure. Should at least balance out or may actually come out ahead on this.

Got the email yesterday. I’m kind like you now. I’m not sure if I’ll keep it with the $250 fee. It was alright with the $195 fee and you got $100 in travel credits. It was also nice when we went to Canada to not have to pay exchange rate fees. But now my Chase Freedom Unlimited doesn’t have any exchange rate fees. So might just drop back to the old green card.

Yep will definitely be canceling my card.
My Discover card is my primary anyway, and I can't justify the Amex now with the increased fee

The prior annual fee was $195, not $90.

So this morning I got a chance to sit down and look over all the perks and what is going on with this new update.
Backstory, I went from Amex Blue to Amex gold early in 2017 and have enjoyed the perks so far, especially being that the $195 was waived the first year.
Now that I look at it, I will unfortunately miss the 2x on gas purchases as I spend $400-450/m avg on fuel, however I spend $950-1000/m avg at grocery stores and restaurants, so all in all I’m improving my points balance by ~54% for an increase of $55/y.
I am considering getting a fuel only card in the near future, which could allow for the best of both worlds.
IMO it was a good card, but if you eat, drink and cook a lot it’s now a great card, even with the $250 price tag.

Yeah, the changes don't bother me. We've used it primarily for the grocery benefit as my company Business Gold Card is the one I buy gasoline with anyway.

I just ordered my metal gold card. Wife wanted the rose gold, but was unable to get her rose gold unless I did the same as primary carholder.
Other than the 2× points for gas, which I don't use much of, the other changes look appealing. The 4× at restaurants and grocery is huge, given that's where most of my charges are.
All in all, I like the changes, and the spike in annual fee won't scare me away.

Chase Sapphire Reserve was my go to card but this Amex change blows it out of the water. I will be cancelling Chase unless they step up their game. War between credit card companies are good for us consumers.
This might be the greatest all around card in history. 4x on restaurants and groceries is insane. To me, transferrable points are much valuable than cash back.
I fly to Europe nonstop by Air France. Either Chase ultimate reward points or Amex membership reward points are transferrable to Air France. With this change I will get a couple free nonstop round trip tickets every year.
My only complaint is Amex is rarely accepted worldwide so I will have to get a no foreign transaction fee Visa card without the annual fee. I believe Capital One has one. Also I will miss the 2x on gas.
Good bye SPG. Good bye Chase. Hello Amex.

I officially have been converted to the rose gold in Apple Pay.
My wife really is low maintenance and doesn’t spend much...it was the least I could do. I can’t wait to slap the rose gold on the table at a business dinner.
