^^This^^

I get there are a few that have achieved the OT's question. However, percentage wise--not a lot.

Quite the false assumption to think that everyone on TDings lives in LA. For example, the Texas economy is booming and I would bet at least 20% of TDings lives there.

Also, TDings is going to highly over index on college graduates versus the median population. He median salary in LA is not indicative of the median salary of the TDings visitor.

Right, I grew up in a part of Louisiana where around 10% of the population graduated college and the average income is $33,500(!). But that information isn't very helpful in estimating my income because (1) I have a JD and (2) I live in Houston now.

I live in Denver.

Anyway, it depends on what does 100k mean. Is it 100k total comp? Salary? Salary and bonus?

I made 100k at 27, but that was salary, bonus, stock and some free housing. I cracked 100k in salary at 33.

41 and make more after bonuses.

Pretty happy with where I am. I was the first in my family to go to college and wasn't real impressive with grades in college (3.1). College wasn't great and thus there weren't a lot of good companies I found early on to interview with. Just took one of the first jobs I was offered and was making $19K a year. Started moving up slowly by jumping to better companies, but I remember telling my wife in my early 30's that I wasn't sure I would ever make above $50K.

I don't think the thread ever made clear if the $100k is total compensation or base only.

It's pretty amazing what changing companies can do to salary growth. It also goes to show how poorly companies generally value the talent they already have in-house. Someone should not be able to jump from company A to company B, ceteris paribus, and make 20%+ more (assuming you have raised pay as a concern with Company A). However, this seems to be more of the rule rather than exception.

Even more amazing is if you have management that rewards you internally. These are rare and should never be taken for granted.

I don't see anything wrong with people including their bonuses if they want to.

it boggles my mind that companies don't try to protect talent like this. I know I was laid off for not relocating to california, and they are having a heck of time filling my position. And my whole team quit after they let me go, so it's a double whammy for them.

Just got there at age 27, but I live in an expensive place...would probably make 70-80k back in Texas.

Exactly. I don't believe lots of people make 6 figures. But at the same time, it's not an absurd concept. And if you specifically ask people to state if they've gotten there, you are gonna get a sample that obviously seems skewed.

People who make it sub 30 will probably be vocal. I won't lie, I was thrilled. 30 was my goal and lucky circumstances and tough work made it happen. I was proud of myself. Can't talk about it in real life without being a pretentious arse. So anonymously on a message board when specifically asked is a great time to do it

If making $100k is how I am measuring myself socially, then I suck as a human being. If someone asks me how much I earn then I'll gladly talk about it but I honestly don't care whether someone earns $30k or $500k. Salary is not what defines someone.

I may ask the $500k person more about what they do...

This.
I left two jobs in five years to jump for over 20% in raises. One was related to a government contractor, but they were dumb asses. Both companies didn't care about keeping good talent. The older people would stay because they were nearing retirement, but it was sad how many they let go and just hired the inexperienced and lazy to not have to pay a good wage.
