I'm not saying this is a smart way to spend money, just pointing out how expenses can add up without looking ridiculously extravagant
Leasing isn't a good financial decision with some exception (like rare circumstance and/or incredible lease deal)
Buying less car and used is the best way to go.
As you said, how/if a family decides to put money aside for higher education is a very personal thing.

Also on the kids college, they have to have some responsibility in that.

True in most cases but I fall into a niche.
1) I drive less than 9k miles a year
2) My "vice" is a nice vehicle
3) I like being able to walk away from said vehicle in 3 years
4) I pay 445 a month for my RC 350 F Sport. I will never have to worry about maintenance, and If I really wanted to keep it after 36 months I can just purchase it.
So for me it works. I bake in a 500 dollar vehicle allowance into my budget. I know everyone is going to be like "stuupiidddd" but take time and think about the vehicle you are buying on top of the "vice" you pay to have.
It is not so different after all. I still max my 401k and IRA.
edit: I am paying a little over 16k total to drive this car currently.

That's actually a pretty close breakdown. We also both put away 10% in our 401k's and have other investment accounts that we contribute roughly $500 a month to. Another large expense is travel. (This is somewhere that we should probably cut back). We take 4-5 trips a year with one usually being out of the country. We love to travel but it's an expensive habit.

If it's something you love to do and it brings you happiness. Then why freaking not?
You are taking care of retirement. Live life while you are still mobile.
I never understood people who just hermit and hoard their pennies and never once have an adventure when they are young.
Amass all this wealth just to hand it over to the kids and never enjoy it.
frick that.

Everyone has their hobby/interest they throw money at, absolutely nothing wrong with that. You aren't wasting money if that is what you care about.
It's the people who's interest in cars is going from A -> B but grab a $80k BMW/Truck just to project an image
Cars don't project wealth/status despite what people think.

I will never make 100k in a year.
I am still happy.
I don't regret my career choice.
Most of the time.

Thats the way we think. Sometimes it just feels like we might be going overboard. But at the same time our kids are experiencing things that we didn't have the opportunity to.
