Scoop, this one's for you....

Thanks to its line of gadgets that combine the ability to make calls, send email, read books, watch movies and listen to music, Apple Inc. is on a path to overtake Exxon Mobil Corp. as the largest company by market capitalization.

Apple still has some catching up to do before it takes the lead, of course. As of now, there is a $60 billion difference in the two companies' market capitalization. If the price of Exxon stays flat, Apple's stock will need to rise 12 percent to move ahead of the oil giant, according to Brian Marshall, an analyst at Gleacher & Company.
$60 billion is a long way to go. And I don't understand how they conclude that only a 12% increase in share price is needed to make up the gap... shouldn't it be closer to 20-25% increase?

Yeah, I think you're right:
318,100,000,000 / 913,600,000 = 348.18
= percent change of 23%
318,100,000,000 / 913,600,000 = 348.18
= percent change of 23%

Not if those hedge funds decided to keep it pinned.

And Apple shareholders will still have something to complain about: the approximately $50 billion in cash sitting on the company's balance sheet. "Apple needs to do something with all of that capital," Tran said. "I could understand wanting to have something in reserve, but $50 billion is such a ridiculous number that they should seriously consider returning some of it to shareholders in the form of share buybacks."
It's really surprising that the IRS isn't pursuing companies with the accumulated earnings tax in cases like this where they're clearly hording cash.

With all these analysts starting to blindly say "Apple to $350 by the holiday season," I am pretty tempted to short. The PEG ratio, and expected growth rates leading to unsustainable forward PE ratios make me think the Apple hype has caused the stock to be overvalued. It's market cap won't get to XOM.

While I tend to agree with you, I went into an Apple Store (in Baton Rouge) for the first time this past Sunday afternoon to buy an iPad for a birthday gift for someone I know.
The store was like an ant colony. I kept thinking, "What economic slowdown?"
There was an Apple person greeting customers at the door advising us how long the wait would be before there would be an available sales person. And it wasn't like there were only 3 or 4 sales people working that day. I counted 14 'blue shirts' helping customers.
I realize this is anecdoctal, but I asked my sales person, when I finally got to speak to him, if this was typical for the store and he just grinned and said, "We're usually busier than this. The Saints are playing now."
Scoop may be onto something.....

I've never said they didn't move product. Again, the whole point of this ongoing nonsense is the inability for someone to separate a good business from a good investment.

You may laugh, but I actually thought about you Sunday when I was in the Apple Store. I wished you could have seen it. It was like the Friday after Thanksgiving and they were discounting everything. I learned the hard way, the discounted NOTHING.
I agree with your point. Good business is not the same as good investing.

BTW, its a really easy to get a discount on apple products. There is the educational discount which they give to almost anyone that can kind of prove that they are a student. Then they have a whole host of corporate discounts.
There is no way APPL is worth more than XOM. Yes their margins are far superior but they just don't move enough product.
I will be buying a Gen2 ipad when they are released.

Not worth it to me. A clear conscience is worth a lot more than a few dollars, IMO.

Don't you teach? Why would it be a lie for educational purposes?

when is this supposed to occur or someone else with a decent competitor? I'd like to give one to the wife and take her laptop that she doesn't use for anything but the internet.

And as I wrote earlier, I was buying it as a birthday gift for someone I know and that person is not a teacher or trainer of any kind.
quote:Exactly. My total was a little over $800 because I bought the 64 GB, wifi only model plus a carrying case for it. Add in the taxes and there it is......
Yeah it's probably 10% or less so 50 bucks. meh.

I can qualify for the education discount since I semi irregularly tutor kids. Am I an educator? Not really, but for apple purposes they seem to think I am.

well I don't get the educational discount cause I get a corporate one, which is higher. And all I had to do was show them my business card.
I tend to think of discounts, where they require almost no proof, has a negotiating point. Like a coupon. or like negotiating car prices. Who pays sticker price? Everyone negotiates and this is a negotiation IMHO.

You are going to love it.
Come back and give us a review.
Bust my balls for being a loud mouthed financial novice, not for loving Apple products.
ETA: saw later it was as a gift, sorry.
