Unit at the house died again. It's a '96 and anyone who looks at it wants to replace it. We fixed it 4 years ago for about $5K. Guy wanted to replace it then, but we were looking to move and just fixed it.

Well..... we still haven't found what the wife wants for our retirement house (shocker). This time the guy says it's $2K to fix, but isn't sure that will resolve the issues totally. I have an estimate to replace it and I'm getting another estimate today.

Replacement cost is going to be around $25K for a purchase price or I can lease it from them for $250-$350/month. Assuming that I will move in the next 5 years or less, I'm guessing leasing is the best option? I have the cash on hand to make the purchase so I can do that. I've not considered going to the bank, but I guess I could do that as well.

What's the best way forward here? TIA

I wouldn’t buy a home w a leased AC unit. And 25k? Jesus. I replaced a 5t variable speed Bosch last year for about 8700.

The guy that fixed it four years ago gave me a replacement estimate of $15K. So, I was thinking the estimate I got was inline. I'll get another estimate today for comparison purposes. If necessary, I can get another one.

WTF?

What’s wrong with it? Are they just trying to replace the condenser? It’s not like everything is going to go out on your AC unit at once, and I’m sure your duct work is fine. If your compressor is bad, you do t need to replace your inside unit as well. Something sounds fricky here.

This, for $25k it sounds like they are trying to replace the entire system including ducts. Sounds like you need to see what is included in that quote, and why do they feel they need to replace so much.

I would definitely look into replacing now as opposed to lease and/or fix. Will help home sell a lot easier when the wife finally settles on a house

It was damn near double.

OP, you are getting ripped off.

Please take this advice:
1.) Set up a time in the next couple days for quotes 3-5 hours
2.) Call 4-6+ AC companies to come and give you quotes
3.) Tell them you are scheduling multiple and may overlap with someone

4.) Profit

I have about 30 AC units we own or manage. I use one company for MOST of my service, but I always do the above. Sometimes they are the best, other times they aren't close.

I have received quotes this winter from $6,000 to $13,000 for a unit with 2 units. That was each. It was under half, and the crazy part is the quote that was high was for THE EXACT SAME units.

There is a HUGE mark up in AC units. These sales guys are looking for dummies, sometimes they'd rather sell way less units at a huge mark up. You gotta find the company that wants your work.

Does that quote include a Reach-a-Round? Because for that it should be...

Quote is 50% more than it should be.

I advised the first guy that I had another coming today. I think their prices were based off their lease options if that makes sense. I have a smaller guy to call too. Will call him here in a bit.

Here's what I got from guy one:

2 Stage: $275/month or $17,500K
Variable: $295/month or $19,500K
Modulating: $340/month or $20,500K

5 ton system, new thermostat, new pad and disconnect. So a little less than what I remembered.

If it were me and you are going to sell for sure, I grab a 2 stage. And you should be able to get one for less than half but a good bit for what you have said they will do.

I would never engage the person that gave you that bid ever. Probably not piss on him if he was on fire.

You use the term lease.

Wouldn’t financing be the proper term?

Again, you guys don't understand. Any decent sized AC company has a salesmen that does nothing but quote new equipment. These guys are basically used/ new car salesmen. There's a HUGE profit margin built in.

I don't care if your best friend sells cars at the local Ford Dealer, you still may be able to find a BETTER deal down the road.

Its all about how open their schedule is and how bad they want to sell one that minute. Sure some (or many) will rip people off. But its also that some will give a GREAT deal to fill in a gap in their schedule or whatever.

Now there may be some companies that give Fair quotes all the time, but that doesn't mean they can't be beat.

That $17,500 AC unit probably has a cost of maybe $10,000. The rest is all labor expense, warranty work, and profit.

I'm a sales guy too. Different industry, but it's still sales. Unfortunately, I think these guys have enough business right now. I posted on the OT how A/C might be the one invention I couldn't live without, but that's more to keep the wife happy than anything else. She's freaking out about it. Told her this AM to go get a hotel room or stay with her sister.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep shopping.

how big is your house? A top of the line system with multiple units would be less than $25K unless they are redoing a lot of ductwork.

I would encourage you to look at LINK / or LINK / both of these websites have most models and you can see what the cost should be closer too.

A 5 ton heat pump (not sure where you are) variable speed is roughly $5,000

I received two quotes for a 5 ton unit about three weeks ago here in Baton Rouge. One was for $13,800 and the other was about $18,000. An inside coil replacement was estimated around $6,000.

Nah, like I said you haven't called around enough. I'm really not trying to be an arse about it, everyone just thinks I deal with shitty companies.

I have multiple companies I have a good standing with, but they are routinely beaten. Yes theres some companies that are routinely high, but not always.
