I'm sure threads like this have been started in the past so SIAP. But, what would you do with $500k today taking into account where we are with the stock market, fixed income, crypto, real estate, etc.?

Everyone makes different bets, thats why we have a market.

By you asking this question, I can tell you that the ONLY answer for you is to put it in an S&P 500 index fund.

Brother there are so many variables that impact this as people are already pointing out. You have to take into account
- What kind of debt you have
- If you own a house and still have a mortgage
- Does that house need a new roof soon or renovations
- If you feel like you're in a good place for retirement
- How far you are from retirement
- If you have kids
- If your car is in good shape
- If you have health considerations to keep in mind

At any rate, put it all in the S&P 500

Fair enough. All good points. Sold a piece of property in a self directed Ira. No debt.

If you just had the money to play with what would you do?

I like a heavy S&P 500 fund play along with a handful of companies that I personally like, have faith in, and get paid dividends from. I'd just do more of that.

With true play money I'd probably put a small but not tiny amount in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and maybe Solana. Their potential to blow up is strong, about as strong as their potential to dip hard again.

I’ve actually got about 2% of my net worth in a bitcoin, ethereum and solana portfolio, about 70, 20, 10. Trying to decide if I should up that or just go equities. Real estate just doesn’t seem to make any sense right now with rates

Which companies do you like as dividend plays?

Follow financial order of operations.

Company 401K match (not from the 500K but from cash flow)
Emergency fund (use from 500K)
HSA max (separate cash flow)
Roth IRA (use from 500K)
Pay off high interest debt (use from 500K)
Max 401K (separate cash flow)
DCA in taxable brokerage remaining 500K

This is a very boring approach but works with a retirement mindset. If you want to enjoy a portion of it now, then go spend it.

I just bought some and it was a no brainer. Zero interest loan and payoff in 6 years.

Buying it from a family memeber that inherited the property. I guess it’s not really a loan but the fact I didn’t have to go out and get a loan at 8% made it hard to pass up.

It's simply impossible to answer without knowing the denominator.

Find yourself a couple flippers or people buying rentals and lend them money. Depending on the investor you could probably get a point or two at closing on each deal and anywhere from 10-12% interest only financing. Do 6 month terms with extension fees ( basically another point if they need to extend. )The goal is to have that 500k constantly working 12 months out of the year. I would hold repair funds in an escrow account and release as work is done.

As security you will hold 1st mortgage position and can take the house back if they stop paying. You will find a lot of your high level house flippers have moved into this area of investing as opposed to buying rentals. You can create cash flow, without the headache of being a landlord. Then you just buy a bunch of life insurance to offset the “wealth” part that actually owning rentals builds.

First off,

Do you need ANY of it to pay your bills? It doesn't sound like it so you should be good to invest.

How old are you, what is your timeline for a great return? Or, are you simply wanting to preserve buying power?

Do you own your a home?

Do you already own investment real estate?

Are you currently working and making out your 401k Roth and Roth IRA?

These are the questions I'd ask and then tell you where to put it based on your answers.
