Just like the Pirates were cheap before last year...

not comparable to the Pirates situation

who 2-3 years ago publicly committed to pouring more money into player development and the MLB draft

Before that they were pretty notorious on how cheap they were.

Looking at this overall situation, pretty good for us but it doesn't mean Lee is coming to campus. All it takes is for someone to fall in love with him. That might be the case...might not. A lot of scouts say Lee is the most polished P prospect coming out of HS this year. They say hes ahead polish wise and was topping FB out at 95 in spring.

They might be willing to pay this pick...we'll see though. I didn't think of that situation though where they might just dump the pick to get a extra one next year. That is very true...I hope we get this guy. He should improve our team a lot pitching wise just by himself. I think he'd be a weekend starter by the middle next year. I don't see him being devoted to Football though, personally...

He'd probably be our Friday night guy after the first weekend. (Cause Mainieri probably will give the first game of the season to a vet.)

Well, I personally saw him as the most important recruit in this class. Simply because hes ahead of the game right now and fills a major position of need.

I don't see him making a impact in Football because he'll probably be gone in 3 years within Baseball, while in Football hes almost surely going to redshirt. Tackling multiple sports is tough too for some guys.

the dodgers are financially strapped...the Pirates weren't, per se. They were just cheap

As a Dodger fan, they went for a first round pick that if they could sign cheaper then expected, great they'll do it. If not, just save it for next year for the new owners

I think you're right LE. The Dodgers owner is going through a nasty divorce right now and the Dodgers are in tighten-the-belt mode.

He's gone guys. Why would he not? To come to LSU and get drafted at 15 in 3 years?

Sure, but don't forget he also says he really wants to play QB in college. If he does that really well, he could sign for over 10-20 times as much as he'd get at the $3 million number being thrown around for his spot in this year's MLB draft.
Football QB signings 2009:
1. Matthew Stafford QB Detroit Signed 6 years, $72 million ($41.7M guaranteed)
5. Mark Sanchez QB N.Y. Jets Signed 5 years, $60 million ($28M guaranteed)

So, given the Dodgers' financial troubles and the fact Lee says he wants to play QB, I am still hopeful he makes it to campus (though I wouldn't bet on it).

The Pirates weren't really considered cheap. They were more or less considered stupid because they traded away their farm talent all the time. It has nothing to do with paying draft picks. The Pirates suck for years beacuse they don't pay the guys they currently have and when they get talent up there it leaves when when they are free agents because they fail to build up their organization.

Lee's asking price is expected to be about 3 million according to a paysite article. the 28th pick last year got 1.13 million. The Dodgers first pick last year was at pick 36 in the sandwich round his was 900,000

Which is really way over the range he was picked at from what i could gather from Gammons and Reynolds on MLB Network.

Just because hes saying $3 million doesn't mean he'll settle for only that. Could just be trying to gain leverage and will settle for significantly less.

This. And all these things he's saying about wanting to go to LSU and play QB, and experience college life is all leverage also. IMO, the kid probably does want to go to college, I mean how many people can say they were a stud pitcher and QB at LSU? This kid is gonna bang so many sorostitutes it's not funny. But Zach, if your reading this, wrap it up buddy, them hoes see $$$dollar signs$$$. Anyway, the Dodgers ownership is a mess right now, and none of us know what will transpire over the next couple months. With that being said, the recent history of the Dodgers picks, and with the draft being so deep next year and them being able to use that pick next year if he doesn't sign, I think we can all agree that LSU is sitting pretty good on their chances right now. The Dodgers may have just done us a favor if they're not really that interested in signing him.

Wish I could tell ya but I'm not sure. From what I've heard, his parents have been playing the leverage game more than him. I know he'll be on a free ride here, but his parents would probably still have to send him some spending money. Wouldn't you rather you son to be doing what he loves and have a couple mil in the bank instead of calling home saying mom and dad can you put money in my account?

That would depend on my financial situation. I'd be willing to guess that his parents have money saved for college, which would easily cover those kinds of expenses. A kid can never have his college years back, but in his mind he could feel like he'll be a pro ball player whether he signs this year or waits a few.
